The engines that do have displacement on demand have the ability in the valve train to open a valve so that the piston can move freely.

Yes, Jim Jr. was telling me the newer vehicles have the variable cam timing which allows them to do the cylinder cut out.

mmm, Bull **** budy. I avg 16.3 on highway with a 77 mph cruise control, best of 17.2 cruise at 63mph. But I only get 9-10pmg city depending how I drive. I know it is posible to get at least 370mpt, that is my best, but you have to figgure in stops, accelleration, toll roads. I did this on my trip to WI from NC and back. But if he IS pushing 470 whp then it is posible to get to that 400 mpt mark. More tourq requirs less right foot to not only maintain, but accelerate. But on a stock or lightly modded, BS on the 400 mpt. my $.02

WARNING:Thread Hijack

I dont know.... that 400 to a tank might not be BS. On a good day and ALL highway with the cruise, I get 16mpg. 16x25gal=400.

Im bone stock with a hard lid; DO use the cruise, and my truck is like the slowest stock lightning (always has been a dog from day one-- but was STILL the best f-150 option available). Now to practical, I cant drive 400 miles on a tank, I'd have to refill before 400 simply to keep from running outagas.

Think it is not slow? Dead stop; foot on the brake; 40 degrees outside; asphalt road; quickly remove foot from brake and fully apply the gas pedal and tires will NOT spin. Not convinced? The tires are the winter tires...235/16's. I NEVER wanted Ford to re-flash. They screwed up my 01 ranger 4.0 SOHC doing that(top speed limiter from 02 was flashed in!). So, I figure its like Sleeping Beauty, and I will personally give it a wake up if and when I start to mod it. In the meantime, nothing has been really over-stressed mechanically.

So...... al of you brag about who's L is fastest... I am the winner of the slowest GenII contest

I thought the car mfg's used lifters or followers that could be switched on/off to allow the variable displacement thing to work.

Think you are old? As a kid, I bought a 1964 GTO conv w/389 for $150. The cam was bad, so we removed the two rockers and pushrods to that cylinder. I had a 7 cylinder Goat!
