Question Weird clunking in the front. Any ideas? (I have the washers)

So I have this weird clunking in the front end. It doesn't do it all the time and after it does it, I can't get it to do it again if I try. It only does it when I am pulling into parking spots (slow speed) and when the wheel is turned or turning and while applying the brakes. It sounds like something breaking when it does it. Kind of like something is slipping. I have crawled under there numerous times and haven't seen anything out of place or broken. Any ideas? Could it be the coils springs or maybe a tie rod end???

i have a similar noise.. my clunking is coming from the steering box.. it only happens when i cut the wheel all the way to the left.. i brought it to the dealership and they said that the noise is coming from the inside of my steering box, so they are doing it as warranty work..

I had this problem and on the recommendation of someone from this site I applied a small amount of grease on the steering stops located on the lower control arms. While I was doing this I thought, “this isn't going to accomplish anything”, but I haven't had a clunk since then, and it always clunked when I backed into my garage.

It doesn't do it when I go all the way left or right so it's not the steering stops in my situation. I got an idea from a guy on NLOC. I am going to grease my ball joints after work today. It has been a while since I did them last and that may be where the noise is coming from since it just started doing it.

Listen to "Fear Itself", he knows what he's talking about. It's a very common problem that was talked about a lot years ago here on the forum.

Thanks! For the record, my steering wheel wasn't cranked all the way when I heard the clunk either. I also have the washers installed.

I have the washers and it will still do it, although not as often and it's quieter when it does. I'll probably just grease the stops.

Mine is loud. It sounds kind of like something is slipping in and out or a kind of snapping noise. My buddy was riding with me when it did it and he was like WTF was that??? Like I said earlier, it hasn't always done it. It just started. I have always had noise from the rear but I chalk that up to all the suspension mods I have done in the rear.

That's the bufff sound I was talking about in my thread, but I have not noticed it doing it in concert of moving the steering wheel.

I think it might have something to do with not being able to grease all of the steering linkage joints. I know for a fact that there are two grease fittings under there because I greased them today. However, there were quite a few joints that IMO need greasing that did not have fittings.

The day I bought it had this problem. Took it back to the dealer the next day, and they did exactly what Fear Itself did as stated above. They showed me how to do. Hasn't done it since. That was a year ago. Stupid idea, but it works.
