Thumbs up Interceptor

just finished installing, the infamous "interceptor", andre turned us on to. getting the heat shield out of the way to get to the tranny connection was a bear (for me), but finally wiggled it back far enough for the install. gives you shift kit type shifts 1/2-3/4 turn on the pot, more than that (on my superchipped) truck, will pop your head back and bark tires at slow throttle shifts. i love having the second pot control over the torque convertor delay, left that at 1/2 turn, and no longer does the lock up come on at slow speeds, so you have to unlock/downshift, while in traffic. got mine from Transtar, a nationwide tranny parts dealer, probably one in every city. pt #int36B, E40D 1995 + up.

Bought one Fri. a week ago. Just took it off right now. Thing actually made the truck shift worse at WOT and there was not much at part trottle. Taking it back next week for refund/exchange. Guy I work with bought one the same day for his Expy and had the same problem. Tech line said it could be a bad one. Says he gets about 5 bad ones a year. I guess these are 2 of the 5

Jerrod - Your luck stinks!
remind me not to make any bets on you. Sorry to hear your delima with interceptor. BBQMAN's is the story I would tell, made all kinds of difference.
BTW i put the pulley back on today, took it off and put it back on again, backwards the first time. Gona try some 1/4's with it with new chip settings, and shift points. Looking foward to March 26th and our 1st official meeting. SeeYa Wednesday Night!

Hi Bill, nose around in here, they will sell you one for 99.98?, or most Transtar dist. sell for 80-100. mine was shipped out of St Louis, 2 days to me. neat gadget, when i think of a manual install of a Transgo shift kit, this thing is sweet, and made in Canada. they are making some good things up there lately http://www.thegrid.net/thedrivetrainpage/e40dint.htm

BBQMAN:
Thanks, printed out the link and will think about it.
Don't want to get into it tonite, but need to think about how to merge a superchip/PFP chip with this mod.
I am old school (not Sushi Old School)and run a really bitchin' B&M kit in my 69 Bel Air. That sucker will get all kinds of sideways shifting into second where it is, as I understand it, sheer brute line pressure force that makes the trannie do what it does, not electronics.
Anyway, I may give it a try, never can have too much ooooomph can we?
Bill
PS: Note how we sort of oldtimers don't hit the signature line so much anymore. Need to think about that.

Question

So what exactly is this thing and how does it work? Sal, do you have any opinions on this?

Question

Is the Interceptor made just for the E40D..what about the Gen II Lightning. Do they have a specific application for it ?
Is it redundant if you run say Sal,s chip.
Could it augment the chip and offer more flexibility...Maybe? Sounds like it could be worth the money..Maybe.

Bill,

You're right that it is indeed all about line pressure when you talk the firmness (and quickness) of the shifts in an auto trans.

However, with these electronically controlled trannies of today, the line pressure is determined by lots of different sensor inputs that the computer gets. You have an electronic valve body (basically) in your L's transmission. So, controlling it via electronics _can_ (isn't always) be as or more effective than a regular shift kit like you and I think of.

guys, the interceptor is a chip that deals with torque convertor delay and line pressure for shifts. there are 2 potentiometers to control these to your liking. you could probably get your specific chip person to do the same thing, if you live in Fla or NY, or a lot or back and forth with the chip, or you can turn the screws yourself and put your own sticker on the completed job. Are the pots on the chip which gets mounted down on the trans... I like the idea of this but not if you have to get under the truck to make adjustments..

I mounted (he said mounted) mine, so that i can adjust, with just a creeper and a mini screwdriver, it's not that bad. anyone who has installed a valve body shift kit knows what a PIA that is. if you wanted, you could probably splice the control wire and add 6ft, so that you could adjust it from underhood.

Sal has available a shift kit available, I just had installed. Fooled me at first, because shifting was normal in city driving.
When I got a chance to step on it, shifts were awesome. Highly recommend.
