Question Questions, questions, questions

When I took delivery of my L. I received three keys, two regular ignition keys and a third one which appears identical except it says PATS on it. PATS obviously stands for Passive Anti-Theft System. The key works just like my other two ignition keys. The dealer couldn't tell me what is was for. I guess I just got an extra key? But what I really want to know is, do the 2000 L's have a built in alarm system? The dealer wasn't sure, and I don't see anything in either manual about one, but when I press the lock button on the fob twice in succession the horn beeps as if to acknowledge that the system has been armed. I tried doing this while the truck was parked in my driveway yesterday. A while later the horn started beeping intermittantly. I went outside but I didn't see anyone near the truck. I just tried doing the same thing again. Pressed lock twice, the horn beeped, let the truck sit a while, went out and bumped it as hard as I could, nothing happened. So I am mystified, is there an alarm or not. And if not, why the heck did my horn go off? Gremlins?

The alarm will go off if the door is opened without first being unlocked with the Key Fob. Try this: roll down the window, then close and lock the door with the fob. Then reach through the window, and open the door...the alarm will go off. To disarm the alarm, you have to either unlock the door with the key, or push the unlock button on the key fob. There is no level sensor, so vibrations, and jarring the truck wont set it off.

99 Lightnings do not have an alarm, only the PATS. I don't know about the 00's. I would say you just got a third key for free...

When I asked about the alarm the dealer tried your drill, Atom, and nothing happened. Conclusion, no alarm system. Just tried it again after reading your post, same result. I am persuaded that MB is right, no alarm. Still leaves me wondering why my horn started beeping the other day, with no apparent outside influence. Maybe truck just got lonesome?

Cool

It's a panic alarm.

If someone jumps you or threatens you on your way to getting into your car, then you sound the alarm on the key fob, and attention from other people will be directed towards your Panic Alarm Sound!

It comes in handy for car jackings, but most people forget they even have it in times of great need.
