Fire extinguishers
Here is how I would personally rate fire extinguishers. This is from my personal experience when I was in Crash & Salvage on board the USS Midway (Navy aircraft carrier) From best to worst:
Halon – It interrupts the chemical reaction that takes place when fuels burn. It basically attacks all three sides of the fire triangle (triangle – oxygen, heat, fuel). Most other extinguishers attack only one side of the fire triangle. The BEST thing about Halon is it does NOT leave any residue and more IMPORTANTLY it does not cause any damage or any type of corrosion in electrical wiring.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – This will displace the oxygen side of the fire triangle. It too has the same advantages of Halon as that it will not leave any residue and will not cause any damage nor corrode any electrical wiring.
Water – This of course attacks the heat side of the fire triangle. It too will not leave any residue but it is very possible to cause some possible damage especially to electrical components.
Dry Chemical – The worse type of fire extinguisher to have, in my opinion. It is the white powder type. It attacks, or attempts to attack the oxygen and heat sides of the fire triangle. It has a very high possibility of a reflash. A reflash is the fire erupting, again, once you thought it was out. This extinguisher will leave a residue (white powder) which is hard to clean up. It is also highly corrosive to electrical components and wiring.
Let me put it this way. When a jet on the flight deck would have an engine catch fire on initial start up (not common, but would happen) the people responsible for maintenance for the engines would have no problem if we shot Halon or Carbon Dioxide down the intake. They would NOT have to disassembly the engine.
However if you ever shot Dry Chemical down the intake they would get highly pissed off as that would cause them to have to completely disassembly the engine and clean every single part in the engine due to the white powder getting on everything and being highly corrosive…

I got mine right within reach. Hey you never know. I once had a 84 datsun-nissan 300z catch fire on me due to a leaky fuel rail. It burnt to the ground cause i didnt have a fire extinguisher. Never again. That was one of my worst days.
Where are you guys getting the C02 and Halon extinguishers? I did a quick search on Summit and Jeg's, and they only have the pricey systems with lines/bottles, etc. Can you buy just a Halon extinguisher to mount in the bed or cabin?

Here in the UK Halon has been withdrawn - damage to environment or something like that.
I use CO2 as there easy to get hold of, once used it's cheaper to bin it and buy another.
Available in many sizes from small to massive.
Easy to use and no mess to clear up.

But yea, its ozone layer killing effect was the main reason.
