Maxing out the Maf with the following mods???

6lb lower, stock upper, ported eaton, single blade, JLP intake and 90mm maf????

When I went from a 4 to a 6 lower, i started to lean out on the top end. I'm just wondering if i can add more fuel in the tune or if it's my MAF causing it.

When I dyno'd with the 4 lower, my MAF Voltage was maxed at like 4.73. Would a 6 do it???

I gotta get a predator on there and watch it but my truck is away till spring.

Ported Eaton, 4lb lower, JLP CAI, Headers/Cats, and my MAF is maxed out at 424 rwhp.

If the Maf is not pegged, a simpleadjustment in the tune should do it. If the Maf is pegged there are three possible solutions. The old way of tuning around a pegged Maf, or a Maf extender, or new Maf. The latter is best IMO but make sure the Maf is pegged before spending extra $$$.

My MAF was at about 98% pegged with just a 4#, PSP fast air, and trueflow filter. Torrie told me if I did anything else (port, 6#, etc) that I'd need a 2400 or extender.

i would say you'd definitely be maxing it now, but why even consider chancing it, just get an MAF extender.

Wow....with all the mods I have....I still am only hitting 4.6 volts

MODS
(Ported Eaton, 6 lower/1 upper, C&L plenum, SBTB, E-fan, R-pump, complete underdrive & idler pulleys, 95mm MAF, power cooler.....AND THE LIST GOES ON)

To address your leaning out problem. And...this is just my $.02. Once I put on the 6lb lower...I started to lean out on the top end. This (I found out) was due to my stock fuel pumps. They are notorious for going "limp" on you after you start modding. I changed over to the Walboro 255lph and it fixed it.

exactly

this is why i'm starting to round up some info to see how anyone else has faired with similar mods. I do have a full exhaust too.

I dyno tuned last season at JDM and was around 4.7 before i switch to a 6 lower, nothing else was changed. Jim thought I'd be good to go if I switched to a 6. When i switched, i did a couple blasts down 95 and noticed it wasn't dipping on my wide band like it used to. Then at the track, both runs i made on my street and strip programs, it nosed from 11.8 right up to just over 12 after about 4500 rpm.

I was looking to do pumps , basically because i wanted to pull the tank and check the clamps on the lines anyway. I have a 2000 and i know there was some issues.

If i go the maf extender route, should i need to be retuned?

I planned on swapping to 373 gears in the spring but that might have to be put on hold in favor of fixing this problem.

maf extender

what exactly is the maf extender vs replacing the maf. Might as well keep it on topic rather than using the search button.

what is an extender?

excuse my ignorace but what is a mass air extender? I am fixing to change my whole air induction sytem on my 2000......Chickenears cool-aid with true flow filter, 90mm mass air, c & l intake and a c & l pleneum, and a single blade throttle body, I already have a 6lb lower. Chances are I may run into the same problem that Tallimeca is having since he pretty much has the same mods. Do I need one of these extenders or would I be better of buying the 95 mm instead of the 90mm? Tell me now before I waste MORE money. Thanks!

Tallimeca, i have all your mods, plus a couple more little things. I just installed a wideband yesterday and my airfuel is all over the place. I was dynotuned on my 4lb, where i maxed the maf, so johnny installed a extender. I have since added a 6lb, mail order tune. My air fuel was in the 10's all the way up until 4000, where it creeped into the 11's and then once over 5000, it creeped up to 12.3. I ran a 12.3 on this exact setup and tune, so im obviously leaving something on the table being so rich early on. I am still running stock pumps as well, and i think they are beginning to be over pushed. It's my next mod to replace them, i think im at that point.

a MAF extender is placed in-line between the MAF sensor and your computer. There is a wire that sends a signal back to the computer which is measuring voltage, and the maximum it can read is 5.0v. When you get to the point where it is peaking or very near peaking, which is different for different folks, you need a different MAF sensor/unit OR a MAF extender. The extender augments the voltage signal that is sent back so you have a much greater range and do not peak the voltage sensor. You MUST be retuned to account for this change.

The two MAF extenders that I know of out there are the Zone 5 extender and Diablosport has one called the Maf.ia. The latter is plug and play and is about $160, the Zone 5 needs to be spliced into the wiring harness but it is a simple job and runs about $100. I have a how-to with pics of the Zone-5 somewhere if you'll do a search for it.

your reading with a 95MM MAF is going to be different than us with the stock 90 or 80mm MAFs. Also, I'd imagine weather plays a big part in this too. Warm and humid florida air vs cold dry New England air is going to be a bit different. folks need to allow enough room in that voltage to allow for conditions other than what they saw at the time the MAF voltage was checked.

Sammy thanks for clarifying that. I have put off doing these mods to my truck for way too long. I've been running a 6 lower/filter/ordered tune for year and a half now, its time to wake this thing up a bit more! Anyway, do you think I will peg out a 90mm with all those mods I am fixing to do (listed above) and if so should I get a 95 mm or just buy an extender?

There you have it, Sammy expained it
The Maf Extender is used on most applications and can handle up to 1200 HP if I remember correctly. We had mine set on the first setting, (I believe there are 4)

This is the one I have
http://www.vmptuning.com/cart/produc...&cat=27&page=1

If anyone needs it I'll prob just give it away for $20.00 or something

It also comes with a by-pass plug

We put mine right there off the Maf
You can see the bypass plug in this picture,
(you unlpug that and plug the extender in and WAM you've been Mafed) hehehehe
It's nice and small and can be hidden very easily
