Question A Kill, I think, You Tell Me

Just got back from a run to the local liquor store, only through 1/2 a drink here, and had a chance to run a current model BMW 540I automatic. Not an M5, just the regular one.

Really cool looking driver, African/American, shaved head, very expensive threads. He looked at me, I looked at him and we both sort of walked at the green light and then both hit the metal about 20 feet out. I held first and I assume he did too. I am running stock, chip off and just the PSP filter.

Anyway, pulled the gentleman by about 2 lengths up to about 70 and then he got to one length and I quit at 95 plus/minus, still one length ahead.

Question for you Beemer knowledgable, is this legit or not? I know they are quick as death in the modded versions but I cannot find a 0-60 or 1/4 mile time on what I assume is a stock 540I.

Yeah, this'll do wonders for the reputation of Atlanta drivers!

Edmunds claims a 0-60 of 5.5 seconds...

Steve:
Great to see you jumping into some of the regular threads.

Well, once a Cracker, always a Cracker, even if a transplant as I am.

Seriously, I suspect if we both slammed it from the get go I would have gone up in a cloud of smoke as the BMW's have a lot more sophisticated suspension than we do.

On the other hand, your stats would indicate that it could have been close to heads up if we both knew how to handle our mounts.

Total other subject, but could you reply to my latest on "that other issue" via e-mail.

Got to go for now, with a replenished supply of that marvelous Scottish Elixer I am now on drink number two and will likely be less able to respond coherently in an hour or so.
Just kidding.

Bottom line, possible confirmed kill.

the 6speed would have got you, probably an auto, a kills a kill, so put a notch on your harpoon, Ahab. and find Moby some non-winterized gas to graze on, in between kills

Thanks BBQMAN

I had thought I had read somewhere that the car I was running was about on par with a Lightning but was not sure. So, on balance , I did pretty well.
Nothing official, but my local gas station says the gas formulation will change in about 3weeks. And then, I can switch on either of my chips and have some fun again.

The other day I tried to get a Beemer to race me, but he was too snobbish. I guess I should be glad, cuz it read V12 on the side! Had a sharp nose and very clean, aerodynamic design (I mean the car - LOL).

The BMW V12 with the sharp nose and good areodynamics was almost assuredly an 850. If it had been an 850csi you would have been in serious trouble. Still the best looking Bimmer in my opinion.

Bill,
It's kill, and a very cool one at that. I ran a M5 about a week back and posted the result and I ran another rich punk kid in a M3 on Mon, nice lookin' car, red, nice chrome wheels, stupid "M3 Racing" sticker across the windshield. It was an auto, and the kid gave up after getting behind by a bit,at least I think he gave up?

Ya got him Bill, clearcut. At 95, you were close to a 1/4 mile anyway. My last kill wasn't so clear, maybe I only wounded him. A '99 C5, no less. I knew the dude from partying around the beach, pretty cool; we're talking car to car S/B on PCH in Redondo. He knows what a Lightning is, I've talked it up just a little from time to time. He wants a go... from a roll at about 20 mph. I say no, slow and wait for the next light to turn red. I want to start this one in first gear, for sure. Cars behind us getting p****d. Greenlight, we great launch, by other side of intersection, got'em by 1/2 length. I'm stoked, thinkin' enjoy this, won't last for much longer... but check this out. I maintain this 1/2 length until just over 80 mph! I can't believe this! At this point, his top end takes over and makes up 1 length, 1/2 length lead, and begins to slowly walk away. At 1 length, we're over 100 on PCH; I must be insane...but I got a C5 to submit to low-end, Lightning torque! He conceeds a little bit, is unable/unwilling to speak very well at this point. Is this a (moral) win?

Bill,

My mother (white hair and 65yrs old!) has a 99 540i auto. It's hard to tell witch is quicker by the seat of your pants. The 540 is smooth, quiet and has traction control; no wheel spin at all. I'm trying to get her to go with me to the track and see what it will do. I'll give you guys the results if it ever happens.

Dont know much about the 5-series bimmers but I do have an M story.

A friend of mine's father has an M Roadster. He got to borrow it for a weekend and decided to test it out against the Lightning. In two runs on the street, 0-120 the two cars were doorhandle to doorhandle. All the way. At this time my L wasn't modded. Then we hit the twisties. This is what really surprised me. On the stock F1s I could hold with him through most anything. Seems that the M roadster has a bit of a snap oversteer which limits how hard you can push it. Anyway, I have no doubts that my L in current form would eat that car for lunch.
