Another surprising story:

This was a little over a month ago, I was driving down Jamboree in Irvine (for you OC people), and I noticed a black Porsche driving very fast through traffic. So we both ended up next to each other at a red light, right before a hill. I looked at this guy and thought he was gonna blow me away. A very nice shiny Porsche, not sure which model - it looked like a 911 - it had the big dolphin fin on the back. I looked at the driver and he looked very corporate (we are in a business area), with a pin striped shirt, tie and glasses (and this was on a weekend). I wasn't surprised when he started revving his engine. As the light turned green we both took off and I pulled away from him as we went up the hill - he kept up pretty close but it was a clean kill for everyone to see! He was PISSED!!

So now we come up to a left turn, I'm slowing down for the red light, and he speeds up, and cuts in front of me by inches - then hits the brakes. All right, I think, sore loser, we know who won so I'm just gonna finish running my errands. Well we get to the next red light, I'm gonna make another left turn, he's gonna go straight. He's sittin there revving up his engine real loud, I see smoke blowing out the exhaust, so I say, freak it, let's do it again.

I make a quick turn into the lane next to him, there is no one behind us, as we are entering a dark newly constructed area with a kind of S-shaped road. Okay, I'm revving up my engine too, the light turns green, and we both spin our tires like crazy!! He is slowly pulling ahead, but thanks to the traction bars I'm able to keep the truck under control and as soon as the tires hook up I start catching up to him. We hit the first curve in the road and I'm right up there with him. As the road straightens out I pull ahead again! We hit the next curve and I don't slow down a bit - the truck handles perfectly and I'm still pulling ahead - he must be about 2 car lenghts behind now, and I'm doing about 85-90. The road goes straight again, and as I get up to 100-105 I see him slowly gaining on me. I see the next light coming up, so I start slowing down and get in the left lane to make a u-turn, he continues to zoom by me, probably thinking "what the heck is wrong with my Porsche?" He's probably gonna go sell that car now. LOL.

Good kill Brimstone! If that Porsche looked like a 911 and had the big whale tail and fender bulges, it might have been a Turbo Carrera. If it was that was a most impressive kill, worthy of mounting on the wall. Trophy time!

Say, do you recall if it was the M3 or M5 nathan? I loved your flyby, mine is black, too.

Yoda,

I agree, but I have seen many 911's dressed to kill and can't get it done. I've cooked a couple here in Houston.

How rice-like can you get? (No flames please, not detracting from imports, just those that like to dress 'em up funny)

Yoda,

I totally see your view and you don't have to apologize, I figured he would smoke me. Maybe it was a turbo wanna-be, AGAIN! But on the same note, AGAIN, he started it and I finished it. Another thing to keep in mind is maybe these drivers get so nervous that they screw up when they're shifting gears.

I don't know why though if you're gonna fork out the $$ for a Porsche and drive it FAST why not get the Turbo?

ya some drivers just dont know how to drive or they miss gears. Like I said if it was a true turbo he most likely woulda killed ya, but there are some out there that look like a turbo but arent. It is still a good race to beat ANY porsche - even a 944 (most of these owners think that their car is the *****, but they usually only run like ***** ).

I used to really like 911s, but then I started to work on them and drove a few, If you cant pass a 944 you better start your truck!!! The 911sc runs like a poorly tuned 5.0. I drove several and thought for the first few that something is wrong, but after that, who knows. The mid 90s c4s and rs models are ok but are just a different kind of car. The turbos are unpredictable and very hard to drive in corners. But I could be wrong?

According to Car & Driver, the 540i automatic runs 0-60 in 6.1, turns the 1/4 in 14.7, tops out at 131 mph and pulls 0.81 g's on a 300 ft. skidpad. So, looks like our L's would equal or beat one of these $55K German tanks in every performance dimension. (Except for gas mileage, that is. The 540i gets an 18 mpg EPA rating.)

My boss drives an M3 convertable w/5-speed and his wife drives a 740i. His boss (president of co.) drives a 740i also and his wife drives a Boxster. Can't get any of 'em to give me a run!

Cobrarose, Porsches (especially the 911 and variants) are notoriously hard to drive. Snap oversteer, turbo lag, etc. are just some of the issues. In the hands of a good driver, 911s are FAST. I probably couldnt drive one, but I've seen first hand some people who could.

I hate to say it, but just about anybody can get into a Lightning and go fast if they dont spin the rears. Of course that just says more about how great these truck are.

Good kill, but dont brush 'em off. They can be deadly.

In regards to the earlier question about the Bimmer I ran, it was the M roadster (convertable M-series variant of the Z3 which is also known as the james bond car).

Mike & Nathan:

Thanks for the input. I did find the road test on the 540 auto and guess we could about call it even. A Lightning is really, really sensitive when it comes to staying in first gear from a rolling start. I mentioned that in an encounter with a 98/99 Mustang GT where I more or less lost the race as I could not get back into first gear.

In this case, as a BTW, neither car got any wheelspin in first and as my only operational mod was the PSP filter, I did not break loose in second nor did the BMW.

Nathan, as to running 911's, I would bet there is not a stock normally aspirated nor Turbo on the road anymore. And.....you are so right, if you don't know how to drive them, you are a candidate for the tow truck and some expensive repair bills. If you do know how to, I don't, you have a very awesome vehicle on your hands.

I will always give it to the Germans. They built the "best" tanks and some of the best cars on the road some of which were also tanks. Remember, they had an Interstate System in the late '30s with no speed limit when we were still dealing with log roads between San Diego and Phoenix. Nothing political, just fact.
