Possible reason for why some trucks bog around 100mph
Thank you Sal, I stand corrected. Must have been something I misread. Has any manufacturer ever used the lockup as an overdrive that you are aware of? Seems I read it years back when they first started with the electronic lockup.

Yes 4D, GM did that on thier 80s front wheel drive cars. The lockup would go bad, and the cars would have drivability problems, so some people would just unplug that blue 4pin connector from the trans, and no more problems. Some never even noticed a difference.

Hey all, Sal here. I spent all day today fine tuning some drivability issues with the chips, and one of them was the sudden power loss at around 100mph. It actually takes place at about 90 mph. I did some datalogging of certain engine and trans parameters, and found some interesting stuff. It is not the convertor. It has nothing to do with drag. What IS causing this, is at that point, the timing was dropping to 7 degrees. Now, with the chip, this is very noticable, since the timing is dropping from 22 to 7 degrees. However, it DOES also do stock, with no chip. But it's not as noticable, because it's only dropping from 10 to 7 degrees, but it still does it none the less. So the chips are not causing this, they are only amplifying what you feel because the truck is making more power. I have verified this with dyno graphs from both my chip and the Superchip. What is causing this a hidden limiter in the code, and I worked all day with Mike Wesley to solve the problem. We were successful.
So if anyone has questions regarding thier PSP chip being reburned or other PSP chip questions related to this, please E-mail me privately. Thanks!!

Hey Sal
Good info. Back on the 13th of August when I did the dyno thing on my Lightning that is exactly what we saw. I do not have one of your chips (have a Superchip) but I shared all of this information with Superchips directly and through there vendor (Paul's High Performance). In fact I sent them the dyno plots twice, once by fax and then later by UPS. Yea, the date was there and it SUCKED. I sent my chip back to them in late September and it took a month to resolve many of the issues and enhancements (many) that I requested. This is not a complaint, things do take time. When I received my chip back it was late October and I was putting my big red boat into dry dock for the winter,I have not tested squat since. That is why I have asked to see a dyno test (asked twice) where someone has both chips. I want to see the back to back results. I have Mike Wesley chips on two of my cars and Superchips on two of my trucks. I try to stay as netural as can be on the chip issue but if I find one that will give me better performance you know I will switch. I just want to see data.

Does this mean all Lightnings have this written in to their code?
Babolt: Did Superchips resolve the timing change?
Sal: On another post you implied probs with the trans but didn't elaborate why you thought there might be. Are the PSD's having trouble?

When I spoke with the tuner at Superchips (Patrick) he told me that the timing issues were resolved. At the time my chip was being reworked to include flow data from the Pro-M air meter, gear change to the 3.73 axle ratio and establishing a nitrous program from what was the old base position. I cannot give any solid evidence since I have not driven by truck since late October.
Do we not have some Guys here that will be doing some dyno testing on or about the 23rd of this month. Maybe we could get some good feedback from them.

Hey 4D, Sal here. Yes, all Lightnings have this. Like I stated, it does it with no chip, you just don't feel it as much. We have eliminated it with our latest calibration change. As far as the trannys go, that was just a general statement. When the E4OD came out in 92, it was suppose to be "THE SH*T" for trucks, but turned out to be a nightmare. Ford had made changes to the E4OD every year trying to improve it. The 4R100 is the latest version of the E4OD, and while it's the best version yet, I'm sure with the gobs of torque the Lightning makes, there will be problems also. Many people don't know this, but the new Lightning was supposed to come out in early 98, but was postponed because the E4OD couldn't handle the power of the new drivetrain. The 4R100 was actually developed for the Lightning, and carried over to the PSD, not the other way around

Babolt: Did he say when it was resolved? I think I was M. Troyer's first Lightning chip sale so I am wondering if I need an update. Would love to run up to 90-100MPH to test but I have reservations about doing it off track
.
Sal: It sounds like you're saying it was a design problem that may have not been resolved. Other than that are there any other things such as PSD's that tow a lot have problems? I know we are talking about a wider RPM range with the bolts, is that a factor?

Hey 4D!
It was late October when I got my chip back from Superchips and the timing issues were to have been corrected. On my dyno plots from August I only shared them with a few people ( Paul's, Pro-M, some Ford developers and close friends) the reason was I was embarassed by looking at the plots. Because in both positions you could see timing being pulled and you could hear it on the dyno too. Yes I had very good HP and torque numbers but still something was going on. Don't need to write any more on this, what I will do is call Superchips tomorrow and ask if they keep track of the different iteration to these chips. I am sure that they do, lets see if they will share it. Maybe Mike Troyer could help with some info too.

This is the same problemm I have had all along! At around ~87mph I have a hesitation in rpms, around 3800 rpm, they drop back and then climb again. I'm glad someone figured it out! Now to call Superchips for the return auth. number.
Thanks for troubleshooting Sal.

I called Superchips this morning and spoke with Patrick in regards to the latest programing on the chips. He reported that the timing issue was resolved (October) and that they are working on some winterized fuel issues right now. He did say that if anyone is having problems with their Superchip that they should sent it in for an update.
