Try rolling down the window 1/4 inch before you close the door. Pressure problem solved.

OK, I give up. Could someone tell me where the air extracters are.

Thanx!

Whitelite

The air extractors are located behind the driver and passenger seats. They let in quite a bit of road noise. I think we did leave a little area on the extractors open just in case.

Ford says to leave the air position selector switch anywhere but OFF, so the truck can breathe. Why is this necessary if the air extractors are already providing for natural ventilation?

Steve;
the air extractors (2) are about 3"x7" or thereabouts and are located on the back cab wall a few inches inboard from the edge. Each has several small rectangular rubber flaps that fly open when you shut those big ol' doors and relieve the pressure spike so the doors will latch with minimal effort.

They will also bend outward slightly when the HVAC system is in operation (relieving pressure in the cab). This allows a much faster air 'turnover' time, which is one reason why the (litigation) manual states to leave it 'on'.

If you want to see what they look like, take a peek down between the bed and cab. If you want to take one out, the easiest way is from underneath, where you can get to the locators on the outboard side of each post with a small screwdriver or pliers. Take a peek and it'll be obvious. (They come out from inside the cab.)

Word to the wise: If you decide to take one/both out for a peek, be 100% positive you get them back in correctly and all 4 locators are seated/locked or you have a ready-made water leak -- guaranteed. There is also a bead of a sealer material around the perimeter so be careful where you put your fingers <g>...

Some folks I know have sealed off a few flaps, but that just makes the others open wider to compensate -- ymmv...good luck!

Hey TBL; something I almost forgot...If you decide you'd like to remove those air extractors altogether but aren't sure what you'll do with the large hole it leaves, there may be another option. F-150's that are sold in Mexico (called LOBO's) have a dummy extractor to fill the hole. If you're interested I can get a part number for you.

<Disclaimer> I have no idea how long it would take your dealer to get...you'll have to bounce it off your parts counter man to determine cost and availability.

Anyways TBL, howz the install going on the cab? Are you planning on putting some dynamat on the footwell (underneath where the floor mats would go)? <hint, hint>

Roger:

Sealed the holes w/ multiple layers of Dynamat. It's more than airtight now. Thanks though.

I've included pics of the process. Be warned, the photo's can be quite graphic.

The truck was completely gutted (seats, carpet, all moldings and trims, wiring, etc). A thick layer of Dynamat Professional was layed in place, heated, molded to all contours.

Here are the pics of the Dynamat. After that was all in place, a thick coat of rubberized undercoat was applied.
Wiring was put back.
BTW, who ever had the idea of relocating the CD changer under the pass. seat(left side). Thank You!!!!

For those of you who had any doubts.

What a difference!!!!! You wouldn't know the stereo was on from the outside with the doors closed. Really blocked out the exhaust and road noise.

Kinda glad it's over.

Thumbs up

Hey TBL
Do you have any ET/MPH results prior to the install of the sound deadening material or do you have an idea on the added weight. Not that it really matters. I am really impressed with you install, first class craftsmanship all the way. May I add the install photos to the Lightning collection at Zing.com. Please advise.

TBL: My hat is off to you. Awesome job! I do like your level of attention to detail.

Soo, not to be too nosy, about how much do you think that set you back for materials?

Hey TampaLightning, I was wondering if the smell from the rubber undercoating is lingering in your truck or if its even noticeable? Excellent job on everything though, it all looks great.

Nothing I hate worse than listing to tires humming or my own exhaust wailing. Its ok if other drivers on the road have to here it!

BaBolt: Thanks. Help yourself to the photos. I calculated a total of 52sqft. of Dynamat, 2 cans of rubberized undercoat and a few pieces of foam. The total weight shouldn't have exceeded 25 lbs. max.

Roger: Total cost was about $175.00 and about 12 hours of time.

Pacecar: There was a slight odor from the rubberized coating yesterday, seems to be gone today.

Question

TampaBayLightning,

What brand of undercoating did you use? I've heard that some brands leave an odor for months, while others take weeks to dry. I'd love to do the inside of my truck, but want to make sure I use the right brand.

Thanks
