New Lightning owner, ?'s
New Lightning owner, ?'s
Whats up fellas, I joined the dark side. I have been a GM man all my life (I have owned an S10 ZR2, 02 Z06 vette, and most recent a 02 Sierra Denali). I traded the Denali for the Lightning just this past Saturday, its an 02 Silver Lightning with 18k miles. The previous owner tossed on a Magnaflow cat back and drop in K/N filter. Performance mods will come later. What I am concerned about is the stereo. I had a big stereo in the Denali, and the Lightning stereo sucks! haha. I have an Eclipse head unit and the truck has Rockford Fosgate door speakers, those will work for now. I have taken the storage compartment/box out from behind the seats. What type of sub setup are you all running in your Lightnings? It appears that 2 10s could fit in there, with a space in the middle for the amp to lie. I was just wondering what type of subs you all have in your L's pretty much. Here is a shot of my new toy.
Nice Trade!!
So you traded a Denali for lightning, my kinda guy! I used to sell Denali's at the GMC dealer here in town, and they are quite rickety in comparison to the Lightning. I was thinking about getting one, and I bought a Lightning instead, and I'm glad. The only thing I can recommend on the L is to check the torque on the spark plugs once in a while since Ford never did torque them right, and don't over torque them either. Otherwise you've got a great truck in the Lightning. I'm actually on my second one, and I love it!! As far as speakers go, and box space, I'd go with two 10's. I have 2 Arc Audio tens with dual voice coils, and I run about 800 watts through them, and very nice CLEAN bass. With two 10's you have enough air space, and can get a box that is cut out for the center console, and still have the seats in a comfortable position. MTX makes a really nice box for the L's but I have no idea wht it sounds like. I also installed my speakers firing toward the rear with about 3" of space between the box and the back of the cab. It was a total experiment but it works EXCELLENT. I also mounted the amp on the back side of the box, right in the middle. Good luck, and ENJOY! note, there is plenty of amp space under the passenger seat as well.

That MTX box looks pretty sweet. Will it allow the center console to be moved up or down when the passenger seat is all the way back? How much do those boxes cost?
Yes, that is the factory bed cover on the truck. I can't take much more of this factory radio BS. I turned it off and listen to the Magnaflow now.

bwkelley, I actually loved the Denali. You can't beat quadrasteer. The truck was flawless for me, I put 80k miles on it and purchased it new. I just wanted something fast again, and I need the usability of a truck ( I work on houses ) so the Lightning fit the bill. Heres a shot of the Denali and the Lightning, yes I have already removed that hideous SVT crap from the front bumper.

..yeah, that's the MTX Box I was referring to. Very nice in appearance and function. The quadrasteer is nice on the Denali's. You'll see what I mean about the Lightning being a tougher truck after owning it for a while. Even the frame is a lot better. The GM's have problems cracking at the rear leaf spring eyes. One guy pulled into the Service drive with his bed on the ground one day. The Denali is a nice rig, but it's not built FORD TOUGH at all.

Only downside is you have to slide the passenger seat forward a bit to flip the console.
