Post Hey Bill Murray! Tires

Hey Bill,
I saw on another thread you're spare is a slightly different size than the rest of the tires. Don't run too long like that, especially if it is a rear. It makes you're differential think you're constantly going around a corner and will cause undue rear end wear. No problem in the short term.

I never looked to see if the spare was the same height. If they are not, move it to a front spot NOW!!! You can smoke the diff. clutches in less than 20 miles!!! Trust me I know, the posi-unit in a short turn does not build any heat to hurt anything. Drive for 20 miles with a load" differant size tires" and it will. You end up with a VERY loose posi-unit.

Thumbs up

My Lightning spare is a Firestone 295x70R16 on a steel wheel.

It is almost exactly the same diameter as our stock tires. In fact, when I rolled the tire over and compared it with the stock one, it was a hair higher, leading me to believe that it would be the same under load. (Of course, it was about 3 inches narrower.)

I suspect it would be OK for a short distance.

Morning all:

Hope I'm not whistling past the grave yard, but I went out and measured the tires again, and the difference is really minimal. In fact, it is less than the difference between the two front tires versus the two rear (who me officer?). I had an appointment to get the tires rotated yesterday before I blew the tire the night before, and I guess could have ended up with a mix and match of front/rears on the rear unless the rotation on a Bolt is an X or straight RF to RR and so on.

In any case, I will heed your advice and not horse the Bolt around until the new tire arrives next week.

You mean they aren't the same spec tires?

Now would be a good time to order a nice pair of rims and drag radials so you have something to put on the truck if it ever happens again. You could put them on display in your shop next to your crate engine.

P.S. If you keep calling your L Moby ****, you may take on the nickname of Captain Ahab.
I hope you realize I'm just having some fun with you.

Well Bill,
being as "Moby" has suffered it's first serious "harpoonin'" to it's rear fin, i will second Lightning Bob's motion, to promote you to rank of Cap'n.

Cap'n Ahab here:

How about some real salty blasphemy!

My driving days and enthusiasm for fast vehicles go back to 1954, and my first car was a Model A Coupe with rumble seat.

My right rear tire is now mounted with the chrome acorn nuts supplied with Moby on a steely/open wheel. May the Good Lord help me, fellows, but I like it better than the Lightning wheel/tire combo. I realize the spare is only rated R, but I doubt I will ever drive the vehicle at 140 plus anyway.

In any case, I am seriously perusing the wheel/tire adverts in the various trucking magazines with the possible thought of switching to a more "retro look" combination and just garaging the Lightning original wheels/tires. Certainly not the exact same wheel/tire combo as the spare, but something in the same vein.
