Just can't keep a good engine down.....
Just can't keep a good engine down.....
In power that is..........
OK, so I have had a JDM shortblock in my truck for the last 1.5 years. I don't drive alot of miles or race every weekend, but I like my stuff to be stout.
So, over the last 6 months or so, I have had Jim & JDM chasing some petty a$$ ticking that only occurs at exactly 70MPH. No faster....No slower. The truck made good power with the KB and mild cams (600/700).
Fast forward to about 2-3 months ago.....
I decided to have the truck caged (thats a different post). While it was up in Jersey, Jim called me one night and said he had decided to just put a new engine in and save time troubleshooting the strange ticking. So he tells me he put in a new design shortblock he was working on. OK, great....I am certainly no engine expert. While at it however, I asked Jim to step me up to the CNC heads and newer cam design.
So, as some of you know, at Fords at E-Town the truck ran a 10.78 with 17 #'s boost and at true street weight of 47xx pounds. That was certainly great news and a great accomplishment!! Might have even been a surprise to Vinnie in the other lane with the whipple. LOL.....
Fast forward to JDM day.... The truck runs a new best of 10.64 @ 126. Again, full street weight and 17psi. Jim wanted to put the 2.6 pulley on there, but all he had time for was the 2.8.
I spent this weekend in NJ to pick up the truck (and have some VA coronas). Everything is running great!! Jim was working on finishing the street tune. He makes some adjustments, hits the street and is happy with the program. He puts it on the dyno to get a "Street" program print out. Hello.......615'ish rwhp on the street program. Thats at a measly 12 degrees timing.. Jim is looking at me with a smirk on his face and some concern. I will admit, I am very conservative on my personal tuning requests. So Jim says he wants to change to 10 degrees timing just to ensure safety. I'm cool with that. Change is made, truck is dynoed hot, and 605 rwhp. Mind you, this is with 14 psi. A .330 upper on the KB and a 8# lower. Again, just worrying about the quality of winter gas, he decides to change the tune to 9 degrees timing....596!!!
So street tune = 596/624 @ 9 degrees, .330 upper & 8# lower.
What has really changed in this engine?? I am sure the heads contribute to the output, but the changes in the engine itself include spherical dish pistons, stock bore, and about a 9:1 CR. Jim can fill us in on the details.
Jokingly, we sat around saturday night realizing that a 10 second pump gas truck may not be too far off. JDM has a few things they are working on to help even further the quest for power. And if whipple can deliver a 3.3....well, who knows where that will take us.......
Thanks to Jim and all the crew at JDM for the pizza and assistance with the truck. I look forward to running it some in the future!!!

Yaooow! That sounds like you've got a monster on your hands! Its funny, I was just thinking about CR today, and was wondering if anyone was bumping it up. I figured nobody would be willing to talk about it. I soooooo need to do my built motor!!!!!
Hi Brian
Nice result then and a good drivable street tune by the sound of it.
Watched your truck at Englishtown and it sounded good too.
What transmission are you using?
I have ordered a BTS to go with my JDM long block.
Only down side is I have to rely on another Dyno here in the UK as cannot bring truck to NJ - if I could I would.
So will have to get info to Jim via e-mail and adjustments back to install using hand held.
Good luck and will let you know how we get on here.

OK Brian, When are you going to burn out on this Lightning business. You've been around since running 13s was the common goal. J/K.
Congrats on the brute truck. Runs like a scalded ape. See you soon.

Ricki,
Still running the stock trans, just a line-mod valve, been in there for ~ 4 years with absolutely no problem.
Obviously, I have now seriously started the timer on the need for a new tranny. I know when that day happens, BTS will receive my $. The several people I know with a BTS all swear by it and the warranty provided with it.
Shorty, have you been to the tunnel BBQ yet??? Good desserts there too!! No, not burnt out yet. The last year has been quiet for me as I have been making the truck legal while adding some more bling too! So, a break from the action allowed me to get some stuff done. 06 Charger R/T in the driveway also.
Any plans to head back to Quantico?? or the NoVA area??
Jim is very confident in the new setup, and the identical setup is now available from him in shortblock or longblock style. If the last trick he is working on comes out good, I think we will be at the ultimate endgame for built engines!! Power to spare!!! Note: last trick is in addition to the 32 valve.
Ahh yes, the days of aiming for 13's. Back when I was a whipper-snapper, just a few years ago. It was all the rage to run a 4# lower and try for 12's. Now if you are modded and don't run 12's, you better not post!!! LOL!!

Impressive truck brian. I got to see it at the shop and at Englishtown. I hope to get mine down to those times over the next year or so and am confident Jim will get me there safely.
I really appreciate his restraint with the tuning making sure all is in order and ready to step up.
