Post Unidentified Audi Kill

I find it maddening to have a kill, and not be able to ID the vehicle. It was a new, bright red Audi, with a sleek rather than boxy design, and it was mighty quick. I got off to a horrible start by being too conservative, and wound up in second gear watching my tach needle accelerate the slowest I have ever seen it move. The Audi was pulling me badly, and when he hit second (made a perfect speed shift - you could just see the front end lift) he was pulling me even worse. Finally the blower started sucking some of that cold night air, and the L was getting into the zone. By 100 mph, I was pulling him, and had about a car and a half on him. Though we were still clean and green to the front, we both knew who won, and we shut down. That is the first time I have experienced the depressing sight of another vehicle pulling me badly with my foot to the floor. Hopefully, I will learn how to drive this wonderful beast some day.

Skydive69,

The only new Audi I could see giving you a problem is the A8: a 4.2 liter V8, 310 hp, 5 valves per cylinder normally aspirated at about 3800 lbs.

I don't think they are a manual shift, just a 5 speed auto but I'm not sure on this.

SkyDive,
There are 4 Audi's that I know of out there. The TT, A4/S4, A6, A8. The only one that I would guess has a chance is the S4. 250BHP, 4WD, 6Speed, 0-60 in 5.6, 1/4 in 14.2. Hmmm, them is real familiar sounding numbers.
I bet you P'ed them off good since A) you were in a big truck, and B) they paid upwards of $38K...good show.

Right you are Bobb,

One of my best friend just got an A6 with the 250 hp S4 motor and quattro. He said he was checking about bolt-ons and those turbos respond to bolt-ons about like our trucks do. With about $1,300.00 he can get an intake, cat-back, and chip to put him to 336 hp from 250 hp. That is a pretty big jump.

So just imagine that hp in the lighter weight of an A4/S4! That really is a neat car but just too expensive for what it is.

Later,

Collin

I checked the Audi website, and from what I see, I would think that the car was an S4 from the looks/specs. That baby came off the line very nicely. I was spoiled by driving a 6 speed LT1 for the last 3 years, and I could quickly crank into the proper gear, and be ready to run. I'm still struggling with launching this L. A couple of times I had to back off, because it started fishtailing badly. The moving launch works sometimes, and sometimes it was as it was tonight - too much of a delay causing an upshift.

Acceleration is best at 0-10, or above 50 mph. At mid-range (where it sounds like your race may have started), the trans won't down shift to 1st gear. You got stuck in 2nd gear and kinda bogged until your rpm's reached the sweet spot of the power band.

Does anyone know of a way to get around this resistance to shift into first?

I'm lousy at launching this thing too.

Does Sal's filter and chip help in this area?

In Steeda's ad they have a "shift improvement valve" for F150 for $110.00. The ad says that "This simple upgrade to your transmission eliminates slipage during FULL throttle shifts, reducing heat and transmission wear and improving accelaration. Highly recommended for supercharged expeditions."

I don't know if ours has this since it is supercharged from the factory. I don't know if this would help downshifts. I'll try to call them to find out more info.

If anybody has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thumbs down

I can tell you that both Sandy (skydive69) and I have the latest and greatest superchip installed and by his post and my word here the trans will not kick down after 20. That is one of the first things I found out about my truck on my first drive. I hoped the chip would have fixed it. The shifts are much better .....but don't get stuck above 20

BTW Yoda, you won't be unhappy if you get one of those Audis. The little sucker really scooted. It will give anything a run right off the line. Of course anything will give me personally a run off the line unfortunately until I can get my launch technique perfected.

Skydive,
Another Audi Model that hasn't been mentioned is the A6 with the 4.2L, V8, 310hp (same engine as the A8). This engine became available on the A6 within the last 3 months. Pricetag is about $48K. Most Audis now use the Tiptronic transmission, developed by Porsche, which may be responsible for the speedshift you witnessed. Sounds like it was a good run.
