Formula Took Me!
Hey guys!
Got to meet Wyldman and Lightning Boy out at HRP on Friday. Great to see such a cool a father son team!
Wyldman, I didn't get to see you run? Did run after we talked?
I had a good time at the track. The 1st and only time I've been to one before was when I was in High School! I didn't do any runs, but one of these days!
On the way home, we, (I had two friends with me in the L), went down Westheimer in Houston for fun. On the way up to a light, I was trying to work around some slow traffic, so I punched it. After I get around the sedan, I see an Eclipse and a Honda(he was from the track, still had the numbers on the window) running each other. I skirted around some traffic after they took off. I caught both of them and passed them while they were still pushing it hard. Surprised both of them! We all three caught a light, and blasted it from the start. Damn! I would have thought that turbo Eclipse would have at least had me at the start. He DIDN'T tho, My L was the winner from the getgo! We kept running from a roll here and there, until we got the attention of a Camaro Z28 and a Formula. Both late 90's. The Camaro dropped out after getting wasted 2 times by my L and the Formula. Light traffic kept us from breaking about 65. I took the Formula 3 times while rolling, 1 at 20, and 2 at 40+.
Then comes the sad part. We turned east on Hiway 6. NO TRAFFIC!!! We never did catch a light, but we dropped the speed to about 10-15. I nailed it, and started pulling on him immediately! I hit 60 and had him on my rear bumper. WHAT THE HE#@!!?? He really started to kill me when we hit75-80! I couldn't even stay with him! I tried at least three different 10-90MPH runs with him, same results each time. I noticed the third time that he would really nail me when the L would shift to OD. I never got a chance to run him without OD. I did notice he had some pretty radical mods tho... The exhaust had been cut off somewhere under the car. It didn't make it all the way to the stock roll pan exit. It did sound louder than stock also.
So... How did he beat me? Should a Formula take a L normally? Was it his mods? Was it OD? Was it three 200 pound gorillas in the cab? Was it my full tank of gas? Let me know.
I've got Sal's filter and chip on order, but other than that, no mods!
Hurry Sal! I NEED that CHIP and FILTER!!!!

Nice runs, especially for a stock Lightning! Too bad you werent modded yet, & that you had an extra 300-400 lbs wth you. Without your passengers & some mods it sounds like it would have been a better race. Not sure what the outcome would have been (spcly since we dont know what mods the firechicken had), but it defenitaly would have been closer. Better luck next time.
BTW i was @ a red light this past week with a camaro SS sitting next to me, but he wouldnt race me is was
that he didnt go at it with me.

The Trans AM is very good running car. Ive been beat by two both at standing starts. If we launch right we can beat them off line and pull about 2 lenghts. After that like you said after 60 it is over. Didnt have PSP full meal deal in yet.But did run the second T/A with full meal deal but stayed on the line and watch the rubber burn.

Sounds like it was a 98 or newer Formula w/LS1, or a well modded 97 or older LT1 car.
The LS1 cars have great acceleration from 70 and up. Stock LT1 cars are about the same as the L from 85-100, Below 85 it's all Lightning. To beat an LS1 car you'll need to kill them out of the hole, then hope you can hold them off.

Yep, if you keep messing with f-bodies, eventually you will get your butt handed to you. I ran another z28 the other night. I could pull him from a 45 mile per hour roll. Otherwise we were pretty even. I always shut down around 60 or 70 when I am messing with an f-body though. Probably ticks them off because that is when they are just starting to hit their power band, especially if they are ls1 powered. lt1's are a different story and our trucks can pretty much handle them stock to stock.
LightningDammit:
The LS1 IS FAST (no doubt)
But it sounds like he Sprayed you!
To out run him a few times from a roll and then he killed you from low speed, sounds like he set you up!
Or you were just at the wrong speed, do you remember if your L. went to low gear or not?

Yoda,
Better luck next time with the SS. I think you are right, I may have had a chance with Sal's mods. Hurry Sal!!!
lightning,
I like that "PSP Full Meal Deal"... at the end of the race you can say... "Want fries with that?..."
98_SVT,
Can we take them out of the hole? I figured we'd be traction limited. I did want to try from a start, considering I was doing well 'til 70.
David99,
Do you think with mods we have a chance above 70?
A-lightning,
I was pondering the same thing, but know nothing of NO2. Is there any tell/tale signs?
I did notice that he would really pull on me after I went to Overdrive....

LightningDammit,
Did you get a chance to see the headlights? Were they the older style, ie. recessed in below the hood or did they appear to be the dual "bubble" type with lens cover kind of following the contour of the hood? Also, was there a hood scoop on the camaro?
If the headlights were recessed, he was a 265-285 hp (depending on the year) LT1 . If they were bubbled, he was a 305 hp LS1. If bubbled with hood scoop, then he had the 320 hp LS1.
I have a 96 LT1 auto Corvette, haven't run a stock L, but from seeing everyones posts for stock L's they should be about even. Running the chipped and filtered L's, you guys have got me by about .5 in the qtr (impressive).
Can't wait till my red L comes in.

UUmmhh thats n20 =two parts nitrogen one part oxygen. I have to agree it sounds like he played with you. No real way of telling but if he pulled away from you that bad I would say he sprayed it. Who knows?? Kinda cool though...perfect setup.. let you have him over and over then hand you his tail pipe.. get some nityrous and look for him again.
Brian,
No, after waiting in the staging lane for 1.5 hours, my battery went down because of a loose neg. terminal. Found it, fixed it (thanks to the guys for the help!) and went to the house.
I did, however run again, 3 times, on the way home.
The first time was against a Chevy extra cab that thought he was gonna dog the Ford from the track (he followed me out). I let him act the fool a couple of times, roaring past me, then slowing down in front of me. The 3rd time he stomped it, I waited for his kick down and scorched him like the devil's shorts. After leaving him about 20 lengths behind me, he stayed there, Beastie had taken a big enough chunk out of his posterior and he didn't want anymore to be missing.
The other 2 runs were against a Camaro (late model, not sure what year, it was way dark). I'm tooling home at the speed limit, minding my own when this guy comes out of nowhere and sticks to my bumper. I thought he might be a cop, chasing me from the first run.
About the time I was about to pull over, he pulls up next to me and starts surging and slowing, trying to egg me on. Ok, I let him, he hit his kick down and I hit mine and jumped him by about 4 lengths. And stayed there to 120. I backed out of it and he did too.
He staged up again, doing the same routine, and I let him have it a second time, same story. I had to get off onto another road and pulled into the right lane to exit. He wanted to play some more, but though I may be Wyld, I'm not crazy, time to go home.
All of this, by the way, on the motor, no spray (though I was tempted the 2nd pass with the Camaro, he was quick!).
So I guess that the evening at the track was a bust, but the ride home was fun! (I gotta quit doing that, one of these days my luck and my insurance are going to go right out the window.)
Sorry this turned into a novel, but I thought maybe you guys might appreciate a few good kills.

Lightningd,
I am no expert but anything can be accomplished with mods. The filter and chip will give you quite a boost. I only have the filter and it makes a big difference.
Whatever you do, dont leave your L stock. Hardly anyone else seems to be stock, including those f-bodies.
I didnt mention in my previous post but the first z28 I raced I did hold him off til 95 before I shut down. Kept waiting for him to pull but he didnt, could very possibly have been lt1 powered or I have more mods than I think (bought my truck used with 1000 miles on it).

Why can a car with a similar P/W ratio and superior gearing outrun you over 70 mph? Let's think about it - A*E*R*O*D*Y*N*A*M*I*C*S. You can't defy physical laws.
A six speed LS1 car with a decent driver has a good chance at walking you from a roll (stock vs stock). Those cars run 105-108 mph in the quarter and I'm sure you all know that MPH, not ET, wins rolling street races. I think the outcome of the race which started this thread is perfectly predictable and typical.
Later!
