Short block = block, crank, rods, pistons.

Long block = short block + heads including valves, springs, etc.

Hope that helps,
David

Ouch!!

Man, you guys are harsh.....LOL. OK, a Longblock is a term used for a complete engine with the cylinder heads attatched..other parts vary depending on interpretation, but basically block and heads... A Short Block is just an engine block complete with its internals..pistons, crank, etc. (NO HEADS)
These terms are used for ANY engine regardless of make, model or size. You might be thinking of a BIG or a SMALL Block? Thats a term used mostly on Chevys, due to their Generic Terms, and they mean exactly what they say...Big...(454 cubic inches) and small (283-350 cubic inches, and the actual SIZE is different on the two blocks, they look totally different. Ford, on the other hand really doesn't have a small or big block, unless you want to be picky.... some of the older engines were HUGE, and some people called them Big-Blocks, but neither here nor there, if our 5.4 engine was to be compared to a big or a small block then it would be in the small block family, but I wouldn't say that around any true Ford Finatics ;-) Ford has so many different engine blocks that we call them what they are...289 & 302, 351windsor & clevland, 390, 460, 428, 429, 5.0, 4.6, 5.4....and so on... Hope this helps ya, and dont let these guys bully ya around....LOL
