Odd Noise

Hi all,

I know this isnt exactly the easiest thing to answer, but it may just be a common lightning problem so here we go.

When i turn the truck on and select a gear (whilst holding it on either brake) it sounds like something is resonating under the truck. It is quite a loud resonating/rattling noise. It sounds like it is coming from directly under the driver.

Having just fitted new bulbs to the front, I also found out, then when the load on the alternator is increased (all headlamps and fogs on - thus maybe slightly higher revs) it makes the same noise.

Other than that it runs beautifully without any problems.

I hope it is exhaust related. Or a loose something! But have no idea what it could be (as long is it is cheap to fix thats all that counts). my L only has 1800 miles, but it has no warranty with me being in the UK.

Thanks in advance

Cgeck the heatshields right off the exhaust manifolds. They can rattle loose sometimes*

*opinion based on my 97 Explorer. I don't remember if the L's have them as well.

Can you hear the rattle anywhere other than idle rpm? Did you say that you hear the rattle out of gear when all the lights are on? I have a rattle in gear at idle that I think is the torque converter, 01 with 92k miles. I doubt it's a heat shield as that is more of a high frequency buzz you can hear at a higher rpm.

Check your flywheel inspection plate. They are often loose and will only rattle when in gear.

It sounds like I imagine a heatshielf would sound (Whatever one of those is!) Do lightnings have them?

The sound is what you would expect a thin piece of loose metal resonating to sound like.

It rattles out of gear (more like a buzz than a rattle i spose). It also rattles in gear. However, I only noticed it rattling out of gear when I turned all my lights on. Normally it does not seem to rattle on a normal idle speed.

Never heard the noise at speed. But then again, at speed I dont hear much!

Can that easily be seen by ramming my head under the truck? (out of gear of course )
