Question Care Of K&N Filters

MrBBQMAN, made an interesting comment on one of the threads regarding oiling of filters indicating that there is the danger of oil being sucked into the sensors. There were no instructions with the Airaid box regarding care of the K&N filter. Questions to the filter experts:
1. What is the best cleaning, oiling technique?
2. Under normal driving conditions what would be considered a good cleaning interval?
3. What are the caveats?

What I would have been done is clean the filter with K&N filter cleaner, carefully rinse it with water, let it dry at room temperature out of the sun, then oil the element with K&N oil. If this is the correct sequence, I guess my only question would be proper oiling technique. Perhaps it is explained on the packaging - I have not yet purchased the oil.

The K&N oil is bright red and is fairly easy to apply in an even coat on the filter exterior. I have a Valkyrie also, and I have used the K&N oil on it as well as numerous dirt bikes without any problems. Although the bikes aren't as electronically complex as the Lightning, I think an individual would have to really do a poor job of filter maintenance to cause a problem.

Is your Valk a standard, tourer, or Interstate?

What kind of interval are you using on the K&N on the Valkyrie? I've changed the oil every 1000 miles, but have only had the filter in for a couple thousand miles. I had an exillerating 120 mph spin on my Valk today - I love that motorcycle. I got tired of taking a torque wrench to my $25,000 Harley every time I rode it (probably too hot rodded out), and decided to go high tech. I bought mine when they first came out. Mine is a tourer - green and cream colored. I had the bumble bee one on order until I saw that beauty come in the door, and knew that I had to own it.

What is your opinion of the JBA headers? I am thinking of that, and I presume that your are not running after market mufflers - you make no mention of it in your signature.

BTW, your L must have killer looks, lowered with the Cobra hood. Drool.

I know I am going to regret at least part of this post, but what the heck.
1. I installed the PSP filter as it came out of the box, which did not include any oil or whatever, and there were no instructions as to oiling the filter.
So, what do I do? I didn't like the prefilter as it looks like a diaper on that beautiful cone to me and I sure do not want to hurt the motor.
2. The Valks. The Honda dealers are closed today, so I will ask you guys. As a former Sportster Pilot, I still yearn for the wind in your face ecstacy only a bike can give you.
I hung up my helmet in '88 after getting front doored twice in Connecticut by little old ladies turning left much the same as Skydives experience as a motorcycle cop. Two laydowns were enough at the time.
Now, however, as Pat and I enter the twilight of our career on earth, I have the yearning again and the Valk seems to be the smart ticket.
So, how much do they cost, can you do a deal, and which of the variants is most practical for two 60 year olds to do some Smokey Mountain touring on? Don't need an absolute rocket, but something that can do the mountains at a good clip without a lot of throttle and revs.

Filter oil on normally aspirated engines is not a problem. when you crank the suction up an additional 10psi, over-oiling can cause you some major detonation. a tiny bit of oil turns 93 octane to 85 quick.

bill, you can get a K&N filter care kit at most auto parts stores that sell K&N (pep boys)

Bill:

I have loved a lot of motorycles, but the Valk is the first one I have ever been IN LOVE with! I never thought anyone would ever catch me on any other mount other than a Harley. I always hated Harley rip offs, but when the Valk came out it was so different. It comes out of the box at a 100 HP, with an incredible 101 lbs of torque - the highest recorded on any tests I have ever seen. It turns 0-60 in the 3's. It is smooth, comfortable, and reliable. Went I last rode the Smokies, it was on my next to last Harley - I can't wait to get up there on the Valk. For you guys, probably at least the cruiser model, with color matching hard bags. Lists in the 14's. I sold my Harley, pocketed a few thousand, and had a superior bike. The warranty is an incredible unlimited mileage, 3 years. I guess I might as well tell a story on myself. I always keep the battery of my Valk on a trickle charge - it keeps the battery in great shape. I went out to ride today, and when I hit the start switch, the lights dimmed, and there was no starter motor. I took off the seat, put a meter on the battery, and discovered that it was fully charged. I assumed that there was a short when a load was put on it. I frantically called every motorcycle place I could find searching for a replacement battery. Finally found an exact fit at PEP boys (where BTW, I bought a K&N filter cleaning kit). I took the battery home, poured in the electrolyte, re-installed it, put it on the charger (comes only 75% charged after electrolyte addition), and waited for the green light to come on the charger. After an incredibly long wait, I was ready to go. I hit the starter, and no starter motor, and dimmed lights. I was frantic. Now I have never used the kill switch (you see what is coming) on my motorcycle, and thought that when it was engaged, you got no juice to anything. I found that it was in the "Kill" position (don't have a clue how it got there), and of course when placed in the proper position, I was off and running. Oh well, a good excuse to take the L for a ride. Dumb!

Bill,

MRBBQ is right on about the hazzards of ingesting filter oil with a blown engine. It's more problematic than with a n/a motor, so please take it easy on the K&N oil if you use it. (I use it with the K&N's on my SHO and Harley but not on the L.)

BTW, I really like the black prefilter cover. Think it looks pretty cool. In addition to the extra protection, it makes the filter look a little different from all the other cone filters out there. Guess if we all liked the same things, however, there would be no aftermarket.

As for touring motorcycles, Toni and I are considering either one of the big Harley Glides with the optional bigger displacement motor or the new BMW 1200 touring bike. I love my optioned out FXLR but, due to a back problem, Toni now needs a more comfortable rear seat than what I have (even with the great Corbin Dual Touring saddle I had installed during Bike Week last year), or than what I believe I can get on the Valk or any other bike. I do, however, believe that the Valk is a tremendous motorcycle.

mike, the bwm is one sweet ride, if you go for it, consider a "noisemaker exhaust", as 2 different friends went down (but ok) because of the almost "silent" exhaust on it.

I "hear" ya, MRBBQ. That would be my first (and on the Beemer, maybe my only) modification.

JBAs are first class and make a big difference from middle to upper rpm range. I'm going to service my Valk filter this month (9,600 + miles). As you probably know, this is no 10 minute job. I'm also going to do an airbox mod while I'm at it as well as install ss braided throttle cables.

Recent picture from a tour of the "Hill Country". Great bonding opportunity with the spouse!

BBQ/F150SVT -

I could see where an overdose of oil in the air intake could cause problems, but the K&N oil is very very thin stuff. I'll certainly be very careful when I use it on my truck.

Oh boy...those darn K/N units....they are always a problem. I had a friend who liked to clean his monthly for his TransAm....he ended up having to clean his MAF wires because they were coated with oil. It's one of those do a quick single pass enough to just lightly coat the fabric. You definately don't want it dripping. I gather on a cycle you have to do it a bit more regularly. But...on these vehicles, I wouldn't do it more than once per year. The filter actually works better at trapping dust when it is dirty. Like I said in an older post, I had a lot of problems with K/N filters in general, but now that those OuterWears pre-filters are available, I am going to give it another try when I pick up the AirRaid kit.

Hey F150SVT,

I realize this thread is already way off the subjet so I thought I would add my humble opinion. If you are looking to move in in Harley models, the Electra Glides are a great way to go. I have a 1998 with the Evo. motor but have a 2000 Road Glide on order (hope to have it before Bike Week!). I have had just about every model H-D makes over the years, including an FXLR like yours. The Road Glide has the fixed fairing with the dual headlights on front and has the new Twin Cam 88 motor (BTW, it is standard on all bikes except Sportys, not an option).

Alot of new riders that have jumped on the bandwagon lately say that the fixed fairing bikes don't look like a Harley-Davidson, but it is like my dealer used to say, you aren't supposed to stand off and look at it but rather sit on it and look off. The Road Glide is the way to go if you really enjoy a smooth ride and don't care what others think of your ride, although I think it is one of the coolest looking bikes they make.

Anyway, sorry so long but I would take a long look at the used prices of Valk's before I bought one. As good as they are no foreign make can hold a candle to H-D except maybe Ducati or Bimota.

Later,

Collin

Nice looking ride sixpipes. I put a Corbin seat on mine, and it really sits you down into the bike. Other than some chrome goodies, 2 bros pipes, and the Cobin, I didn't do my usual multi-thousand dollar act as I have with my HD's. Looks like a lot of the Lightning guys ride Valks -

To stay off-topic.

Collin -

That's pretty cool. I don't think I've ever seen Harley Davidson used in the same sentence with Ducati and Bimota.
