Unhappy HELP!! Engine trouble

Well, my weekend was shot. This friday I was driving my truck on the highway at a steady 65mph. All of a sudden, the "service engine soon" light comes on. I dont think its mileage related as the mileage at that time was 15,633.8

I've only had this light come on one time before (with my old 4x4) and that time It required an engine rebuild.

However, I didnt notice any strange noises or dramatic loss of performance. Any idea what might be going on here?

I've heard of a few guys getting that if their gas cap wasn't fully seated when the put it on. Try removing your gas cap then putting it back on, and see if that effects the light at all. If not, head for the dealer, because I seem to remember another post where someone got the light and quickly afterwards their motor ate itself.

Hey Nathan,
That light usually means one of the many sensors of emission contol system has sensed a problem. One of those could be your gas cap and it's one of the easiest to check. Reinstall the gas cap and wait a few engine start-stop cycles. If the light does'nt turn off, take it to the dealer.

Cool

This light came on on my 93 Lighting once. I took it to the dealer and downloaded the codes. The fuel regulator had a ruptured diaphram and was putting a much higher than normal fuel pressure to the engine. This can result in your engine filling with gasoline and creating a situation called liquid lock which will basicly ruin your engine. At the time I had over 100,000 miles on the truck and a new regulator fixed the problem. Your problem is probably the loose fuel cap. If problem doesn't go away, go to shop.

Thanks for all the help so far guys. I'll check the gas cap. Also, I put on Sal's filter kit the day before I got the light. Coincidence?

When i first put on my downs intake, my truck ran rough at idle for a little while and then went away. Even now it kind of has strange charateristics. When starting and ****tting off. it doesnt start as smooth and makes a funny noise when shutting down. Oh well the sound is worth it!

Nathan,

One other thing to check: look at the intake sensor that you transplanted fromt he stock airbox into the tube Sal provided, That sensor is a pain to intstall right and if you didn't get it to seat, it may have loosened or even fallen out.

Let us know what you find....
