Detonation questions
I had a GMC Typhoon before my recent purchase the Black Beauty. With performance chips and higher boost you could run higher octane fuel and not have detonation.
Is that the same with the lightnings? The best gas I can buy here is 91 and I use octane booster. I am going to purchase a chip and don't want to grenade my engine.
Have there been alot of cases of the superchips with detonation problems?

My Superchip gave no detonation right out of the box, however, when I had it installed at the factory, they highly recommended a minimum of 93 octane, and ideally 94. I'm running 93, and it runs perfectly.

Vern,
I just installed Sal's PSP chip and he recommends 92-94 octane. He also recommends that you stay away from race fuel or octane boosters unless the chip is designed to be used with them and to avoid oxygenated fuels if possible. Like Yoda suggests, Sal may be able to burn you a custom chip that will work with lower octane fuels. (Superchips may be able to do this also.)
Like Sandy, I am currently running 93 octane with great results and no detonation.
BTW, I owned a Syclone before buying my Lightning. Enjoyed it for 6 years. (Bought it from my neighbor who purchased it new in '91.) Unlike I'm doing with my L, I kept my little Sy 100% stock. Great truck, if a tad fragile - which is one reason why I kept it stock. The Sy/Ty's are fun vehicles and I really enjoyed mine, but overall, I like my '99 Lightning much better.
