Post Major Muckup - Major Luckout

Thought to share this with you folks.

Late going to the shop this AM. Got to playing with Lightning and Thunder and forgot the time.
Get underway, not going fast, and finally got to US 41, a major 4 lane parkway.
Sitting in merge lane behind a guy in a minivan who is on a cell phone. Guy misses 3-4 opportunities to get on 41, and I am steamed. Finally, light changes and he merges very, very slowly.

I take off, not real hard, behind him and he slows down to get on phone again. I am really ticked. Didn't happen to be looking at speedo, but estimate 15 or so still in first gear. Nail Moby ****. Ndow, I am at about 20 degrees to the traffic lane or say 10 o'clock. Moby lights up and swings around to the right so I am now at 45 degrees to the inside lane with my nose pointed at the van. As an old ice racer, I figure if I let off it will lurch and I may lose it, so stay on it till it hooks up again. Hook up and let off and then Uh OH.
About 50 meters down the road is one of Kennesaw's finest in his little white Camaro.
I figure #### and just coast by real slow, park 3 meters in front of him on the shoulder and put my hands on the wheel.
Nothing....I look in the mirror, and the officer is laughing himself silly pounding on his steering wheel. After 10-15 seconds he just waves me on.

Heck of a way to start a day

Glad you guys enjoyed the post.
And yes, Cop's have hearts and a sense of humor. I used to be one in San Diego, and didn't write a lot of cites I could have just because of the coolness of the perp.

Word of caution, though. I went back to the intersection to try to figure why Moby pulled a 180 on me that could have really caused a problem. Near as I can figure, I had steering wheel at about 2 o'clock as I was preparing to straighten the truck out in the passing lane. In looking at the pavement, it appears to have the same crown effect as most of Ga's highways to get rid of our excessive rainfall. I would imagine that as the truck transitioned across the crown in combination with the steering angle it just had to do a ballet pirouette. I'm used to that on wet,icy or snowy roads but it is more induced. This was scary as I was totally unprepared for it.
On the other hand it is a tribute to the chip and filter that the truck can do this from a 15-20 mph roll. Don't think I'll do it again though.

Great story Bill. We certainly have a few things in common. Both graduated from high school in Calif. in 1957, and I also was a police officer. I was a motorcycle cop for the City Of Palo Alto for 5 years from age 21-26 until I lucked into a gig as an airline pilot with Eastern. Of course being on the Motorcycle, I wrote a lot of tickets, but the story you describe would have had the same conclusion had I witnessed it from behind a badge.

Sandy, skydivers know what 0-120 is really all about. I taught the late Carl Boenish to jump his first square canopy at Elsinore back in '70. My SCR is #729, but no longer jump due to back fractures from motorcycle accident near the arctic circle. Ah those adrenilin rushes...

Sandy, Zonaman and others.

One of these days we really have to get together and swap war stories!!!!
This group has some very interesting backgrounds. I too was a Harley driver, for instance and did the Peruvian equivelant of the Baja 1000, did that too by the way with a 4x4 Volvo Swedish army staff car as a support vehicle to our Volvo powered dune buggy, did off road rallye driving in Sweden, winter style, summer style and on the ice.
Sounds like a lot of you guys did a lot of similar crazy stuff.
If ever in the Atlanta area, be sure to let me know so we can chew the fat.

This is truly a fascinating group. Zonaman, it's too bad you are still not jumping. A large contingent comes to Florida every winter for the POPS (Parachutists Over Phorty) championships. All the old times like Lou Sanborne D-1. A great group of jumping old farts. Unfortunately, I just sent in my membership for SOS (Skydivers Over Sixty), another great group of guys. Bill: Just prior to leaving the police department to become an airline pilot, I was on the police bike at a pretty good rate of speed. A left turner took me out. I laid the bike over at the last second thinking of a comrade who was a parapalegic from a similar accident on a police bike. I hit so hard that I got knocked into the air, did a complete flip in mid-air. As I was flying through the air (major 4 lane highway with no dividers) I was thinking what a shame it was that I was about to die at the tender age of 26, and how I was not going to be an airline pilot afterall (I already had my start date with Eastern), when I came slamming into the pavement flat on my back. As soon as I hit, I knew that I was home free. I got up, my helmut was cracked down the back, my motorcycle was totaled, my uniform was filthy, and I didn't have a scratch on me. It helps to be young, and it helps when it is not your time to check out!

Sandy, Bill, I really hope we can get together at some point. We treacherous old farts have more time available than these eager young pups. I will be heading to Florida in July (no specific date yet) to attend an amputee convention for my wife (yet another motorcycle story)in our motorhome (will miss the toys on this trip!) We should exchange e-mail addresses so we don't clutter up the board too much. Sandy, I was a member of the Deland Falling Angels and my team won the very first GodFrog scrambles at Zepherhills. We probably know a bunch of people in common.

Work the Web!

Zonaman:

Super, if you come to Orlando, please let me know so that we can get together. I learned to skydive at Deland. I just made one in '72 - I was in the mode of wanting to try everything in life at least once. It took me 20 some odd years to make the second. I was then hooked and had my D license in 9 months, and did 300 jumps my first year.

Sandy/Zonaman and any other old farts.
My e-mail is Mostoysinc@AOL.com
We are just 2 minutes off of 1-75 about 22 miles north of downtown Atlanta. If you catch us on a day off, the house is another 15 minutes down the road and anyone is always welcome to the store or the house.
Bill
PS: Non old farts are welcome too!!!!!
