Question Basic ?'s for Sal...

SAL, Been reading your posts since August, thanks for the education...! Thinking about spending that $500 for your filter and chip, and wondering about a few things. If the filter and chip combined are good for a half second, how does that translate to horsepower(combined and individually). I'm (eventually)going to a 4.10 rear-end; can you calibrate your chip for this, speedo correction too? What ET gain would I realize from the gear change? If I had to choose between the gear change and a 80 hp NOS kit, what would you advise? Thanks in advance, props to you, look foward to doing business with PSP in the near future.

Hey Steven, Sal here. The chip and filter kit increase hp an estimated 35-40 rwhp. The reason I say estimated, is because you really can't measure the full gain of the filter since it is a ram air design and you can't really measure that on a dyno. I have showed the chip to produce 25-30rwhp and 30-35 ft-lbs of torque. And the filter shown a 9hp and 5 ftlb increase on the dyno, which seems like such small numbers for how the truck reacts to it . As for the gear change and the chip, I am almost 100% sure we have found what we need in the software to change that. I have to just check it on my truck and make sure that it makes the speedo display correctly and not just recals the PCM. The choice between the gears and NOS is really up to you. The gears work all the time, and NOS can be a real pain in the buttocks after a while; I know, I ran it on the 95. Personally I'm not too keen on juicing a blown motor, but to each his own.

Hey Sal, do you really think that A 80 hp shot of NOS will hurt the motor? It seems to be a stought little motor. Im not talkng about using it all the time but 4 the ocasional trips to the track.

The NOS seems to be worth it, but I think I'm gonna go with the gear change first, and see how everyone else does with the NOS over a longer period of time. SAL, I've never used NOS and was wondering what you meant by it becoming a pain after a while?

Don and Mike, Sal here. Don, the reason I say that is because both supercharging and nitrous increase cylinder pressures, create heat and both require proper timing for long life. Mixing the two doubles the effects, and doubles the chance for problems to occur. An 80hp shot isn't really alot, but on a blown motor, it has more critical needs. I too, am curious to see the long term use of nitrous on this motor. Thanks to the Wyldman, I have dyno sheets that help me do chips for the nitrous trucks. Mike, what I meant by nitrous being a pain, is it's not as simple or cheap as people may think. To use it properly, you must have other equiptment such as heaters, blankets, pressure gauges, etc. You MUST have optimum bottle pressure other wise you're wasting your time and money. To run it on the street, you really need a remote bottle valve. To help make sure you won't damage things, parts like Hobbs switched, timing retard boxes, shut-offs, microswitches, etc, should be used. All of these parts really add up, and then throw in the fact that nitrous costs between $3.00 and $5.00 a pound, and the term "cheap horsepower goes out the window. You get 4 passes from a 10lb bottle running a 125hp shot, so using an 80hp shot should be good for about 6 passes. That adds up quick, especially at an average of $40 a bottle.

Thumbs down

Sal
Saw a 99 Lightning with 100hp NOS system make three passes last friday night at HRP. Forst pass was 12.34, second pass was 12.47
Third pass was 14.79. Blew bottom out of truck, crank broke and rod locked. The crank as I understand it is only good for about 500 hp. This truck will be headed to a local dealer for a grave attempt at warranty work? The owner has not been on this board and told me he was from San Antonio Texas. OUCH!

As far as I know ther wasn't anything else done to the motor, nothing he would reveal. I noticed a set of M&H slicks on the back mounted on a set of steel wheels, and he was running open headers with torque tubes about 20" long. This guy had his truck and trailer to match, with tires, tool, gas, work bench inside. Real nice setup, like maybe he was doing this all for racing only?

Sal,

Thanks for the info. I just ordered my Cal-Tracs traction bars today, truck will be lowered with bars on Tuesday. Then I'll see how I do at the track. Then I'm probably gonna go with 4.10s . . . then a custom chip from you . . . I'm real hesitant about using No2 though.

Question

Sal, Should the gear change be done at the dealer to keep the warranty in effect, or can I or someone else do it? What are the correct parts to use; another thread said something about Expedition 4.10's being a drop-in replacement. Thanks in advance.

I want to hear more about the Lighting that ran 12's. Did he have any other items on it? to bad about him blwing the motor, will be kinda hard to get that one past a dealer for a warranty etc.... Hey Sal, how much do you charge for a reburn of the chip if I decided to get some 4.10's in the future? Ya I know that a proper setup for N20 wont be cheap but a set up that is a 80 shot with a progressive flutter switch installed will definatly help save the driveline, engine & its internals. I am just looking to fianlly get into high 12's
