"Service Engine Soon"
WTF, on the way to work this morning, about 1 mileafter I left my house the litle warning light came on. I stopped, got out check the engine, didnt sound funny, seemed to be ok. got back in went to work. Called Ford dealer to see if it was becuz it needed the oil changed (changed it 3500 miles ago "oops") but he said that it could be anything from the gas cap to something in the engine. CRAP, need to take it in (tuesday), but it seemed to drive all right on the way home. All the fluid levels are ok. Have any of you had this? Any suggestions? Sal should I take the filter assembly off b4 I take it in or will it be ok? Ya talk about ruining my weekend, not only am I really bummed about it, I was suppose to go race tonight & obviously didnt go becuz of it!

You're dealer's right. The light comes on when ANYTHING is out of spec. It's the OBDII crap the feds have insisted be on our vehicles. It's supposed to monitor all of the loops in the emissions systems and light the check engine light to get you into the dealer. I had the same thing on my '98 F-150. It turned out to be on of the O2 sensors in the exhaust. The computer at the dealer will tell them exactly what needs replacing. Most likely, the only think you might harm this weekend is the atmoshere

Little story on the check engine light. I wouldnt ignore it. I had a 97 4x4 and took a road trip to NM. One morning the light came on. I noticed the day before the truck was a little sluggish, but figured it was the altitude. Moments after the light came on, the truck backfired twice and stalled. Net result: bent rod and cracked oil pan. This all happened in my driveway.
Not to scare you, but I'd have it looked at.

Yoda; check your gas cap, take it off and reinstall it tight. In 8 out of 10 cases its just loose. Mine come loose all the time and does the same thing. I get out tighten it and it goes out at restart. Otherwise get it checked. Should only take your dealer about 20 min to check it with his "Rotunda" computer, and give you a diag. The gas cap thing is a problem with these trucks in not staying sealed. I am currently making a round rubber gasket for mine to fix my problem. I hate for anyone to touch my stuff so I wont let my dealer fix it for me. Just the way I'm am.

I took the air box off of my '99 and the service engine soon light came on also. Believe it has to do with the electrical connection on the air box. What can be done with that once the box is gone.

i have a 92 f 150 with 171,000 miles on it.check engine light has been on for about 170,000 .after about 10 trips to dealer i said the heck with it.still running strong .my 96 explorer has 88,000 and the light has been on since about 32,000.still runs fine.the way i see it, if it runs fine,no power loss, no loss of fuel mileage, the heck with the light.just my 2 cents worth!

hey sal, any thoughts on this, could it be the air-intake system? I am thinking about putting the stock airbox back on to see what happens. If the light goes off then I know it is porobably the power-filter. Just wanted your .02 on the subject. Also when I do take it in 2 the dealer should I out the stock air-system for warranty reasons os should I be ok????
Hey Don, Sal here. The only way the filter kit could cause the MIL to come on, is if the plug came off the IAT sensor. The filter itself won't set any codes. OBDII systems are very complex, and there are over 10 systems that monitor the vehicles powertrain. Like mentioned previously, it could be anything from the gas cap to the intercooler pump not working. There are over 1000 codes in EEC5 PCMs. No bother guessing at anything, just have the dealer check it out. Also, the way the EEC5 system works, is if it's a priority fault, it will set the light after it goes into closed loop (warms up). If it's not a priority it will set the light after it sees the problem twice in a row. If the problem goes away, the light will then go out after the PCM sees no fault for three consecutive drive cycles.
