Washed my L and the windshield broke!

Sure, my truck was sitting in the sun, but who washes their car in the shade every single time? Only the front portion was getting any sun. So when I started hosing it off before soaping it, I heard a crunching sound when the water hit the windshield. It cracked completely top to bottom. There were no other flaws in the glass prior to this happening.

I think everyone has heard of (or experienced) putting a hot glass coffee pot in a sink of cold water and having it crack. But come one, a freaking windshield?! I thought these things were tempered glass or something! Anybody else have this happen? Freaks me out, because my driveway has no shade, so I wonder if this is going to happen every time I wash my L in the heat.

Same thing happened to me about 5 years ago; cold water on hot glass. The crack started in the middle bottom, curves toward passenger side 6" above the bottom. I haven't replaced it yet because its not in any line of vision.

I've heard of that happening but have never experienced it. That sucks, man. I wash mine in the sun all the time becuase I have no shade in my driveway either, but fortunately it hasen't happened to me. The only good thing here is FL requires there to be no cracks in a windshield so there is a no deductible provision in our insurance.

Yes I had the same thing happen to my old truck once. My windshield split right down the middle. The place that replaced it said they had never seen anything like that before and my insurance adjuster said it might have been a tiny chip or crack in the windshield. He also said it was a pretty freak thing that he had never seen before either. BTW i have cracked a copule of coffe pots as well. IMHO I wouldnt be to worried about it happening again.

that sucks, but it is too freaken hot to wash your truck at high noon in TX anyhow. Take a break, drink some beer, and wash your truck when the sun starts to go down and things cool off.
but that is pretty nutz

Halflife, I would agree, but it was 4:00pm when I washed it! It's being replaced right now down in the parking garage. The tech looked at the crack, and couldn't find any chips or anything else that would have caused this to happen. I'm going to cringe every time I wash it now

My POS sliding rear window exploded on the highway last year, out of nowhere, don't know what happened but I took the opurtunity to install a solid rear window. Maybe the Glass ford uses has explosive properties like the connecting rods.

I had a friend that owned an old full service gas station several years ago that had a "hand wash" bay like most did in days of old. One cold winter day he pulled 'his" truck inside the wash bay and turned the hot water hose on it and the windshield and back window actually blew out of it. I guess the cold air inside the cab combined with the cold surface temperature of the truck itself did not like all that hot water hitting it......Funniest damn thing I ever saw at that time.....The look on his face was priceless....

This happened to my truck a couple of years ago with cold water on a hot windshield. I found a tiny stone chip/crack at the top of the windshield that I suspect caused it to start - ran about 12 inches down on passenger side and then started across.

If you are worried about it I would just run the A/C with the defroster and that should cool down the windshield before you get it wet.

Quick update on this - the replacement windshield has a 6" tinted section at the very top, unlike the stock one. Man, does it look great on my black L! If you guys ever have to replace your glass, ask for the tinted one - you won't regret it.

The lack of the tint is one of the things that setst the '03's and up apart from the earlier L's. When I had my window replaced I went without the tint again. Being that I am 6'5" I didn't want to feel like I was driving a H2 or a tank for that matter.
