Insurance & Storage
I currently have stored my Lightning for the winter. When I stored the vehicle I took the insurance (Geico) off of the vehicle. I have received a letter from the (CT registry of motor vehicles)
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles is giving me hell, and asking me to present some form of proof regarding the vehicle being insurred. Do I really need to make a car payment of $500 + Insurance fees on a vehicle I can't drive for 5 months because it's in storage?
Anyone with any information on how to get the DMV off my *** would be greatly appreciated. They have asked me to send a fee of $100 dollars to them with my proof valid insurance coverage. I don't really understand what this means because this is the first time I have owned two vehicles at the same time, and then had to store one of them.
Do I keep the plates, while the vehicle is in storage or do I turn them in and place them on hold?
Thanks,
Metallic Blue

Try seeing if they have a form that you can sign saying it is "Inoperable". I did that here in Georgia so that I could restore an old car without having to pay insurance on it. Hope this helps.
Frank, Thats a great idea. When I speak with the DMV how should I word it? Hold my hand pretty please *LOL*.
To be serious for a moment, i've probably been asking for it from the DMV. I wanted to keep her in heated storage so that each week I could go to the garage and do work on her. I've been cleaning & polishing each section at a time.
I spent last week doing just the tail gate. It came out looking nice. I just don't want the DMV coming after me for something silly.
Any further help or ideas from others who stored their vehicle for the winter would be great.
Sincerely,
Metallic Blue

Have you called and explained the situation to those idiots? I can't believe they would require insurance while in storage...but then of cause rational thought and government aren't exactly synonomous with each other.

I'm not really up on state regulation but, usually the financing company, if any, requires insurance on the vehicle while their name is on it.

Insurance laws vary from state to state. I live in NY, but have several Lightning buddies in CT. You can't do this in NY, but in CT apparently you can register a vehicle in 6 month increments. He does this on the 94 Lightning. He stores it for 6 months, and drives it the other 6. But his truck is paid off. I know in NY, if a vehicle has a loan on it, it is REQUIRED that you have 100% full coverage the entire time the truck still is being paid for. You have to look at it from the lein holders point of veiw. Let's say you store your truck in a heated, locked, security monitored garage. You don't get safer than that right? Well, what if a huge tree falls and crushes the building, or a plane crashes into it, or an earthquake? Not likey yes, but it could happen, and then what happens when the truck is totalled? You walk away from it with no insurance and the bank gets an unpaid-for totaled truck? Or better yet, the bank forces you to finish paying for it according to your signature on the loan paperwork and what are you paying for? A totaled pile of scrap metal. See my point? I know it sucks, I hate insurance compaines, and I hate paying them. My license has quite a bad history, and I pay almost as much for insurance as I do for the payments. But what would suck even more, is paying that hard earned money, for a pile of scrap.

Just got off the phone with (Geico). Nice guy in CT is helping me out. I have a few options:
1: Return Plates & Pay Fine.
2: Pay $10 To Have DMV Hold Plates For 5 Months. Still Pay Fine, but No Insurance Coverage.
3: Coverage by (Geico) Comp/Collision/Theft while in storage $207 for 6 Months. Still pay Fine.
I chose option 2. The guy I spoke with at (Geico) will be sending a letter stating that the vehicle had been covered. He was a pretty nice guy after telling him the mistake I made. I will pay to have the Insurance coverage incase something does happen.
I may still have to pay the DMV, but we shall see when I receive the letter from the Geico rep. I hope the DMV see's I'm just a young kid who made a mistake instead of a young kid who intentionally tried to keep the vehicle uninsured. I really did not know I had to keep the vehicle insured even when it was being stored away.
Thanks,
Mike

I went through this with my insurance company and they don't have a problem with me taking the collision coverage off the truck while it's in storage. However, the comprehensive is a **must** for the exact reasons Sal stated.
The insurance company had me fill out a collision waiver form specifying the storage dates and that I wouldn't drive the truck during this time. I had the form notarized and submitted it to them for approval.
If you let the insurance company know what's up before dropping your coverage, I don't see why it would be a problem or why they would even notify the state. I think they probably do that to keep people from obtaining insurance just long enough to register the vehicle.
