Which Flowmaster ScottDog & Radarlove?
Hey ScottDog & Radarlove,
I got the pictures of your dual Flowmaster setup on your Lightning. I am curious. I think I'm going to go with the 2 chamber 40 series setup on my truck for more sound. However, there are three styles of this muffler. In your pictures, it looks like you have the center outlet style on each one, but what about the inlet for each one? Do they have a center inlet or offset inlet for each one?
Thanks in advance,
Robby Wilson

Robby, My truck was the test truck so it is different from the pictures. Mine has two 50 series mufflers, Left comes in the bottom and goes out the top, Right comes in the top and goes out the bottom. I think the only difference on Mufflex's system is the pipes exit the center on both. If you have a shop do it they will make what ever you want. Go with the 40 series I would if I did it again. Also make sure they put the mufflers back far enough that they do not sit close to the bump in the heat shield for the floor. Go with s/s high polish tips too they look better than stock.

Well Robby, I'm still working on the Flowmaster situation. I went from the 50's to the 40's (two each) and now have had a long talk with my mechanic. We are going to put the 50's back on. The 40's are too loud and actually sound kind of cheap. I didn't use the 40's with the "Delta Technology", so I can't say how they sound. The short tailpipes make it a challenge. The straight 40's sound like I hooked glass packs straight up to headers with no tailpipes.
I feel like it runs better with the 50's too. More torque, but that's just a seat of the pants observation. If you try 40's, get the Delta version.
As far as shapes, I have a combination offset and center exits and inlets. It's up to the installer, but if you like, I will make notes of how he did it. We retained stock header pipes and the stock tips. That way I can always reinstall the origional if need be. Let me know if you want the exact layout, and I will get it for you tomorrow when we put the 50's back on.

Sorry about the multiple responses. I was having server problems and kept hitting stop and refresh. Oh well!!

robby-I'd have to agree with scottodog. Although I don't have a lightning, I have a 5.4L.I started with the 50 series and then got a 40 series(single in/dual out). I could tell a big low rpm torque difference after the 40's install.Lost alot. The 40 can be heard better at idle, but not as deep of a tone. Also the 40 has alot of resonance @1800 to 2000 rpm.Like he said, the Delta technology is supposed to get rid of that.I've heard a single chamber on a 4.6L with a single in/ single out that sounded good. Not like either the 40 or 50,and was not loud at all.The guy said it got rid of his power drop at the 1-2 shift.Might be worth checking into if your shop will let you hear several mufflers before welding them on(most will).Their only about 6" long so think of the weight savings!

He's right about the drop in torque. It's pretty obvious. Also correct about the sound. The 50's are much deeper and mellow, but still plenty loud. They just have a classier sound than the plain 40's I put on. That's been my experience. The 50's are going back on as we speak. Thank goodness he didn't weld them to the header pipes!! Just sealed and clamped with the stock stainless steel clamps.

Hey Scottdog & Radarlove,
Thanks so much for all the great advice. Boy, I sure like this message board. Tons of good input from fellow enthusiasts. I sure appreciate it a lot.
Scott, do you know if Mufflex Performance has their 50 series dual Flowmaster bolt on system ready for our trucks yet and what they are asking for it? Also, how much are the s/s tips? They sure look great. By the time I get home from work everyday, they are probably closed. Are they open on Saturday. If I could order the mufflers with the pipes pre-bent and everything I would. After much thought, I think I am going to go with the 50 series in stead of the 40. I want a reallt aggressive sound, sort of like the guys with the modified Mustangs have, but I sure don't want to lose power. Thanks again everyone for the great info and I hopt to hear from you soon Scott about the availability and price of the bolt on system.
Sorry for writing a book & thanks again,
Robby Wilson

Your exactly right about this sight! This is how it is suppose to be.
About how much did the 50's cost for both and what should I expect for the install?
Thanks

Robby, Mufflex is open on saturdays. You can also contact Denny in the question section of their web page. I think the s/s tips come with the system. I am not sure but I think the system goes for under 500. HTTP://WWW.MUFFLEX-PERFORMANCE.COM

Steve, I used the 50's without Delta Flow. They really sound good. I have them back on now, and really don't understand what I was thinking when I took them off for the 40's.
Robby, Denney at Mufflex is a great help and very knowledgable. Even though I'm in Dallas, he took my call and was very helpful, taking the time to share his experience with me. He seems to like the Delta Flow technology, so I'm not sure if he has the plain 50's. They sound really good and aggessive, but I would listen to him. He may have a Lightning owner who will let you listen to their veh. before making a final decision. I think he prefers the 50's, though.
