Fuel Tank "Y" Fitting revisited

After reading a post by Jody I dropped my fuel tank this past weekend and found this. If you have been batteling burnt plugs or fuel realted issues at WOT it may be a good weekend job.

God Bless,

Hey Suavy ,hows it been? Thank God you found that before it caused a lean out on the motor. We all know you've had enough problems already. What made you look there and just curios how many miles you have on the truck?

yes, didn't see the original post on this, what year of trucks does this problem effect, what causes it and what is the fix? just wanna keep this in mind for myself since I might be changing out the in tank pumps to 255's.

I have 120K on my truck and have had the pumps out 2 times since I put the big pumps in back in 2002. Jody made a post about this up graded Y fitting and I read the full post. Last year this time I blew a head on the dyno going WOT I thought it was tune related. Thank God I have not went WOT with my new motor. The truck has been basicly sitting since I got the new motor in. It is set to be tunned on 9/12/05 by Alternative Racing.

Peace,

Suavy

found the original post here for those who have not read:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=209950

good info for those going into the tank, definately will pick up the stainless y when I install the new pumps.

The other thing is kinda disconcerting, the fuel pressure jumping/hunting with the upgraded 255 twin pumps , is that common with all the 255 pump kits sold? if not which ones, if any do not have this problem?

I'm not sure that they all do it. Mine did and I think I have another friend who is doing it also, will know for sure when I get a fuel pressure gauge on his truck. I know a third guy with the same pumps that has very low fuel pressure with those pumps (20 psi or so) but fairly steady. His "Y" is fine. I'm starting to think that the resistance in the pumps is different enough from the stock ones that you need to add another resistor inline on the circuit to get the voltage a bit higher and straighten out the fuel pressure.

A lot of guys have tuning issues with the a/f jumping around at idle/cruise yet very few of us monitor fuel pressure, we just assume it's right. I'm thinking between these 255 pumps maybe not liking the reduced voltage these trucks use at idle/cruise and those plastic "Y"'s in the tank breaking, getting crushed by the clamps, or whatever that a lot of tuning issues aren't tuning issues at all, but mechanical issues with the fuel pressure not being where it's supposed to be.

Just a friendly reminder, I am using a larger fuel line to connect the "Y" than stock. This stainless one doesn't come in 5/16" but only 3/8", so the stock rubber lines may have to be changed. Make sure you use efi hose, not carb hose, and that it can sit inside the tank without swelling. I found mine at a Car Quest store and it was about $10/foot, but a foot is more than enough for the three hoses.

well, when I finally get around to purchasing the pumps, and when I pull the old ones out, I will definately ohm out the resistance of both the new pumps and the old pumps and will post the results, I will also run a fuel pressure gauge to verify fuel pressure. thanks for the heads up. I will definately ask questions when I purchase this kit also.

also which kit did you purchase and who from? I think this is important and should be published to let people know about possible impedance mismatches from stock pumps and different kits.

I ordered the Moroso kit it had 1/2" ports and I used 3/8" gas hose the Y block cost 38. and the hose was about 10 bucks.

Suavy can you post a pic of what you bought getting ready in the next couple of weeks to get my new built motor put in ,thinking i might need to do this....I have a fuel pressure guage on I have the 255 fuel pumps 60 lb injectors a idle it reads 36-38 the more i lean on it the higher it goes....The oil pressure freaks me out all the time riding down the road stays around 55-75 at idle drops sometimes to 25 grrrrrrrr,...any ways if you can show me in detail would be great thanks ....Bob

Did you go with the HO oil pump? (High Output)
I was freaking also cuz at idle I would se any ware from 18 to 25 psig. However, the pressure would build as I gave it gas. At 3/4 peddle it would have 80 psig. The pressure gage acts like a tach almost goes up and down with the gas peddle. I can see if I can get a pic of the Y block. I went to true value auto parts and told them what I wanted and they ordered it in. Had it the next day. I also bought 3 hose barbs that were 1/2" NPt to 3/8" hose fitting. Then 3/8" gas hose.

God Bless,

Suavy
