Post A question about boost

I have read back through almost all the posts in this forum and I have what may be a stupid question about the boost guage that I couldn't find an answer for.

For me when I am driving around and I am at a constant speed, my boost guage reads full vacume. I also do not hear any supercharger whine. This happens at any rpm. The only time the guage jumps up and shows boost is under acceleraration. This is also the only time I hear the whine of the supercharger. The more gas, the harder the acceleration, the higher the boost, where at WOT and around 5000 rpm the gauge reads about 7-9psi depending on temperature.

Is this how a supercharged enngine is supposed to work ? I have never had a supercharged engine before and from what I understand should boost not be constant with rpm ? I know the truck performs up to spec as I have run door to door with two 99 Camero SS's that freinds on mine own.

Also if I sit in park or nuetral and rev the engine my boost guage sits in the vacume area and I don't hear the supercharger whine.

TIA for any and all info.

Hey Snowplow, Sal here. There is a by-pass valve on the blower that opens during vacuum conditions, and closes during load (no vacuum) to make boost. So the only time you will see boost, is when there is no vacuum. No vacuum will only occur during WOT and if the truck is under major load at part throttle.

Thanks for the info Sal. I was thinking of coming down to see you sometime in the spring (say March) for a chip and an air intake. I want to go through the first winter stock to get a feel for how conservative I will need to drive. Also maybe in the spring the excahnge rate will be better on Canadian funds When I do come down, can you do a chip and air intake install over a weekend ?

I just installed an Auto Meter Boost/Vaccuum gauge. At the high RPM's in second gear the factory gauge is pegged into the black. At the same time the new gauge is reading between 11.5 and 12 psi. The new gauge has a sticker that says it's calibrated, so I am assuming it's correct.

Anybody think that this could not be right?

That's pretty close to what I found on the dyno a couple of weeks ago.

Question

PFA,
I am going to play 20?'s here. Where did you mount the guage (A-pillar etc..) Did you mount any other guage? Which guage did you get (Pro comp, Phantom, Ultra lite....?)& what size were they? Did you install them, & if so how hard was it running the lines into the engine compartment? Any & all info would be great

Yoda-
I made a temporary bracket from plexiglass and attached it to the top of the steering column. It's the only gauge for now, will probably get a temp gauge for the intercooler and then mount them on the A-pillar. Phantom-I believe 2 1/16(?) don't have box in front of me. I put a hole through part of the original vaccuum gromet and ran a 5/16 rubber hose (4 foot BARELY was enough) to the split in the line. I pulled the original connector out (left of the master cylinder) and put in a T. Ran the line up under the dash to top of steering column under column rubber flap.
