Lowering with Roush: with/without shocks?
BABOLT's lowered Lightning looks (and apparently handles great). I noticed that he did not have the shocks replaced, but a later posting mentioned Bilstein shocks and twice the money. Any comments regarding the need for different shocks when lowering a Lightning?
Hi Zonaman and Mumbly
Mumbly stated it correctly I did not upgrade to the Bilstein shocks. Ford stated that for the Lightning there was an upgraded shock, therefore I stayed with it (saved money too).
I have been in an F150 with the full Roush kit (springs and shocks, it was Hot V6's truck) and I can attest to what Mumbly has stated, it handles. One other item, you can perhaps tell the direction that I am going with the modifications to my truck. I have also looked at the new Edelbrock shocks(looks cool) and from talking to the guys at Steeda they really like them (they have lowered a Lightning and used them). Just some options, you get to make the choice.

The Roush dealer in Dallas I talked to said that he would not recommend the lowering kit without the shocks ($1495 installed). A shock is a shock and I certainly understand saving half the cost by changing only the springs. I think when I get mine done, I am going to go with the Bilteins as well. I'll just have to save up a little longer.

Correct me if I'm wrong BABOLT. I believe that BABOLT did not want to change his shocks. I did change mine and feel that it was a needed change from factory shocks. As for the lightning they may have upgraded shocks from the factory.

I like the height of my truck. The Roush kit that you guys have put on your trucks looks great....quite pricey though, but I guess that comes with the territory. I am probably going to just change out my shocks come springtime, so hopefully by then I can find either the Edelbrock, Koni, or Bilstein set for this beast. I wish my truck was about 1" lower in the front, but any lower than that and I may have problems in the winter. I am going to stiffen up the front and rear a bit with some urethane bushings. That should tighten it up a bit more.

I currently have the Roush lowering kit on my STX, including the Bilstein shocks. My previous truck was a '97 F-150 with the Bell Tech lowering kit and stock shocks. Both ride and handle great! I don't think the Bilstein shocks are worth the extra money.
P.S. That is my white STX in the "before" photo on BABolt's website, in front of Roush's facility in Southgate, MI.

A little off the subject, I am looking for some information on the Roush exhaust. I saw a Roush at the local Ford house and it sounded great. The exhaust looks like the Gibson supertruck. Do you know what type of exhaust Roush uses?
