Post LIGTING EXHAUST SYSTEM

Does the 1999 or 2000 lighting come with dual exhausts. Are they the same as other f-150's.

Yes sir, duals are standard. They are not standard however, in that they exit the passenger side in front of the wheel well.

Rumor has it that the 2000's will change to exit out the back, as the exhaust does bad things to the wheels. So far, I have seen no detrimental effects on the wheels, but my Black Beasty is still quite young.

You would have thought they had that figured out already. My '97 Supercab toasted the pass. side wheel after 2 years and you could not get it clean.
Chuck, assuming you get the Bassini system too, what do you think about having them make up two sets that run out the back instead of the side? Someone else has already done this with a made up system and just had the muffler shop leave the original tips in position and made up some sort of mount.
How about it, a triple exhaust system. Would mystify the hell out of everyone!

A while back I read someplace (for the life of me I can't recall where) that the wheels on the '99 Lightning are coated with a heat and exhaust residue resistant material in order to combat the wheel damage done to some of the earlier F-150's with the side exit exhausts. Also interesting to note that the published description of the 2000 model noted that only aftermarket chromed wheels might be at risk due to the side exit pipes.

Hmmm!? Triple exhaust? What a concept!? I like it! I don't know if I can afford it, but I do like it!

Hmmm....don't think that you would have to worry too much. The wheels are powdercoated, so in essence, that stuff is pretty resilient to a lot of abuse. I had powdercoated aluminum wheels on my 95 Z28 and and through 3 Canadian winters with all of the salt, there were no detrimental effects. Big deal anyways, if the coating wears out, I just get them re-done....

Cool

I am planning on installing headers, but leaving the stock muffler in place. I understand that it is a pretty good unit and the addition of headers should amplify the exhaust note somewhat. I've been told that the stock Lightning muffler configuration is a true 2-in 2-out system.

I havent really gotton a good look under my Lightning yet but reading the thread re the exhaust got me to wondering if one could run a Y in front of the cats and out the stock side location with covers over the tips and then the duals out the back as the other branch of the double Y set up. The covers could then be removed for track use and fitted over the rear tips . Kinda like the older hot rods and vetts with side pipes .
AsI said, I havent really gotton a look underneath yet so I hope this isn't too dumb of an idea.

Hey guys, yes SVT did put a special paint or powder coating on the rims. If any of you are wondering Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords along with Super Ford had GREAT aricles about them earlier this year & both of them mentioned that SVT has put like extra paint to protect from the gases. I dont think it will ever happern to mine tough, I guess you can call me a clean freak (my wife says that i am obsesssed -oh wait i gotta go look at my truck....... thanks, it sure is beatiful, any ways obsessed?!?) but i clean my truck almost every other day. I wipe it down to get the dust off my black beauty, and i aslo wipe the crap off the rims, u know like the brake dust which is also bad for rims. So mine dont really get a chance 2 get dirty, at least I am hoping they wont in the future

Got a question i am currently using that california claener to wipe the dust off, have any of you used these with any detrimental affects?

Yoda,

I have been using mine for about 5 years now, started on my black 95 T-bird and now use it on both the truck and the car. The more you use it, the better it gets. I can wipe down the truck in about 10 minutes and have a respectable looking truck, if it's not too dirty.

Around here, black vehicles need to be washed 2 or 3 times a week, dust is like rust, it never sleeps!

My cars, truck and motorcycle are all Black. Have worn out 3 California Dusters. They work well.
