Exclamation Something to fear

It's Speculation, But:

An LS1 (GM) dervived Engine called the 8100 for the new suburban... Yes that stands for 8.1 Liters (around 490 ci). The ported and polished job on the silverodo SS was far fetched, but a big production engine in a smaller (1500 series) truck, easy. If the 8.1L made as much power per liter as the 6.0 L does, that would be around 425 hp.
Anyways, there are Chevy truck crazies just like us, some are run nitrous on 5.3L (Slvrdos 1500), run around 13.6, so bewarned.

PS: I doubt the 8100 exists, but man, the gas stations got to love the Idea...

Actually, the 8100 does exist, and people have seen it. The vehicle that it was seen in is the Chevy Suburban. Now, will that make it into a smaller truck? Who knows?

As for the Silverado SS being far fetched in the form it has appeared in magazines, it's actually a fairly mild motor. Truck motors aren't normally built for high horsepower, just good low down torque for pulling, so the current GM 6.0 motor isn't a good gauge of the potential of that motor. The fact that Chevy is bringing out the 425 hp 5.7 liter in the Corvette should be testament to the fact that their 6.0 liter motor, based on the same design as the 5.7, is easily capable of 395 hp that was advertised in the prototype show truck.

If the Chevy is made, it will definately be a tough contender. From the weights I've seen advertised, it's by far a lighter truck, and with a higher horsepower motor than the Lightning (If they stick to the planned 395+ Hp) it should be faster. Before anyone flames that last statement, I have seen the magazine times, and they vary widely. I also remember when the Lightning was first coming out, the magazines were quoting 14.6-14.8 for the quarter mile. Boy were they wrong, and if the SS is produced as a 395+ Hp vehicle, I think they will again be wrong.

The machine work on the 6.0L engine for the Slvr SS will make it too expensive to due, Although GM may do it to just to spite ford...
Mild, yes for a built engine, Mild for a modern automobile, no...

P.S. I've have some friends that have worked on the 6.0L truck engine, and it is not a very robust engine, the 5.3L is a better engine, same block, (other issues)...

Hey guys,
Was at my favorite spot in the grocery store, the magazine rack while my wife gets the groceries . Anyways this months issue of Truckin has "dealer" factory hotrod trucks. Bought it figured that the lightning waould be in there (wasnt) and i wanted to see our beloved truck whomp some *** over the trucks. well according to there reports the new Silverado SS dousnt seem to be all that fast, posted 1/4 mile times at like 14.7 - not very impressive (aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh to bad, at least the SVT truck boys can hold their heads high). Pretty good article if you wanted to chek it out. Has a Dodge RT with a supercharger installed (we will still beat it). As a matter-of-fact the lightning looks better than all of them & in a straight line will smoke them all.

P.S. how does the license plate "SNK SKNR" sound?

Sorry guys it wasnt in Truck Trend it is in Truckin where they test the factory "Hotrods"

I know most of you on this board really like the straight line stuff (me included) but the Lightning is the complete package. .85G in the corners and Lightning fast <G>.

The one thing the Chevy's have never done is handler. If the make it fast in a straight line and do nothing for the cornering other than add big tires (AKA Dodge) then it's just a pretender.

SVT knows there's more to life than the 1/4 mile and all of their products work as a package. That's why I want the Lightning.

Typhoon,

Being a Corvette guy (C5 & C4) as well as a 99.5 Lightning owner...please tell me about the FACT that GM is putting a 425hp 5.7 in the Corvette. There have been rumblings, but none of the Corvette guys that I know are aware of this at this time.

Cool

Yoda, the trucks were all at fairly High Alt.
Those rouse vehicles were cool, I also like the SC Slvrd 1500, neat, but kind of slow, with a stick (2.5 mile shift lever throw).
Sticks are fun though...

Good catch Silver. No flame, but people need to read the whole article before they pass judgement, and even then, remember the quality of the drivers. As I said, before the Lightning came out, when there were still only the press versions being driven and reported on, there wasn't a single Lightning that could manage even a 14.5. Of course, now we know that unless you get a weak Lightning, you can easily beat that.

The article that was referred to said that the test conditions were over 2500ft, on an UNEVEN surface (No that doesn't effect off the line traction ), with temperatures over 90 degrees. Not exactly ideal conditions for a drag race.

Next thing to be aware of is that the SS being tested is still pre-production. If the real version actually makes 395+ hp and has the advertised weight of 4000-4200lbs, it's hard to see how it wouldn't be faster. More horsepower, less weight.

Tybee, I'll have to look for the Hp quote again. I can't remember where I saw it. It seems like it was in GM High Tech Performance. There was never a doubt, from what I had seen, that there was going to be a special option package available that would produce 400+ hp. The article I read said it was no longer a rumored 400 hp, but a real 425 hp.

I FEAR NOTHING! I AM DA WYLDMAN! Bowties and Dodge boys are just fodder for my Beast, she needs a steady diet of red meat, the redder, the better. I don't care if they have 1000 hp, I'll find a way to make 'em bar-b-que! Cooked or raw, Beasty doesn't care!

Just my .02 worth.....
