Post 99.5 Superchip>>part 2

Just got the new superchip an hour ago for my Lightning. Took all of 10 minutes to put it in. I had already prepped the pcm for the installation. I'll be going to the track tonight to see if I can improve on my best time 14.0@97 I did go around block and the seat of the pants meter says Yeepee! The idle seems better, the tranny shifting is much better and acceleration seems more quicker. I did do a dead stop no brake torque pedal to the metal run. Before I could lay down a good 10 feet of Goodyear rubber. Now it seems like tha tires are spinning for most of first gear. I didn't use a tape measure but I would guess at least 50 or 60 foot. This chip is worth it just for the better shifting of the tranny. I'll try to get back later tonight with the dragstrip results. See ya Jeff

Here are the results of my runs at Rt 66 dragstrip in Joilet Il. Track elevation is about 6 or 7 hundrd feet. Weather was 80 with about 50 or 60 percent humidity. Barometric pressure was around 29.90 I have run a previous best of 14.2@97 mph at this same track. I installed the chip around noon on Weds. and headed to the track at 4pm. Installation was silky smooth. One note though which
has been mentioned before...the bracket that the pcm fits in has a 1/8" lip at the back of it. You should take that bracket off(2 screws) and flatten out area where the chip plugs into the back of the pcm. If you don't then their is a chance that the 1/8" lip could act as a wedge and maybe seperate the chip from the pcm.Even with a small portion of that lip flatten there is still plenty of it left to keep the pcm from sliding backwards. Now to the good stuff. I made 9 runs total all when the truck was at full operating temp and then some. I ran pretty consistant. 2.0--2.1 60' times all night. ET's were 5--13.7's and 2--13.8's and my 1/4 mile trap speeds were either 100 or 101. 2 runs at 14.2@97 in the number 1 position. Thats awesome. The increased throttle response and improved shifting of the tranny is enough in its own to install this.I was very skeptical at first but now I just shake my head with a half smile on my face as I smoked LT1 Cambirds at the track. They could not believe what kind of times I was running in an as raced weight of 4900 lbs. These are the numbers I ran no B.S. If anyone has any question please feel free to e-mail me. Also I reinstalled the rubber airbox inlet snout. The 2 runs that were 13.8 were with the snout removed. I think the heat from the engine compartment was hurting me. See ya Jeff

Jeff,

OUTSTANDING! What else is there to say? I am not surprised the SuperChip knocked .5 second off quarter mile times and that's a LOT, especially at 4900 lbs.

since i have never installed a shift kit on an electronic transmission, i guess i'll ask, can a chip control the shifts to give you that quick pop a mechanical (springs, drilling out, etc)shift kit can? i have a superchip and the shifts are better, but not near, even the medium setting on my transgo installed truck. or is the only way the old way of pulling down the valve body and drilling. i sure like the idea of chip removal for warrenty issues.

Dear JeffsLightning,

Wow, sounds like you got a fairly consistent half-second off your 1/4 mile times with the Superchip, that's great! So now we at least know that in your particular case, it took a 14.2 truck down to 13.7.

Any further data that anyone cares to publish would be greatly appreciated!

And congrats on a great night at the track!

Say, if you happen to have your time slips and specific data, I'd love to have that in a email if you have it, and happen to get some spare time. (If you're like me, "spare time" is a cruel term)

Thanks very much for all the info you've posted,

Dear MRBBQMAN,

Yes, we can make that transmission shift harder, up to the amount of physical line pressure it's capable of producing. So if you want harder upshifts, that can easily be done, so that you don't have to drill holes in your valvebody, etc. The transmission seems to make enough line pressure, and that's all a shift kit does, is to raise the amount of physical line pressure. With the programming, that can be much more precisely controlled.

Shift kits are generally for those transmissions that are not capable of producting enough physical line pressure, so we generally recommend doing this in the chip first, and then if that still isn't firm enough for you, you can go with the shift kit. We have a number of people (including myself) using Transgo shift kits with a Superchip, with no problems.

Give me a call when you get a chance, and we can go over this in greater detail if you like.

Got my SuperChip back yesterday, and re-installed during my lunch break. The truck started in either program, and the performance on #2 program was awesome on the ride home. It rained while on the way to work this morning, I passed a Toyota truck using only about half throttle. When I pulled along side the other truck, the 1-2 shift occurred. My Lightning promptly went sideways almost taking out the Toyota. I think the truck shifts great with just the Superchip and can't imagine needing anymore in this area. Although I would be interested in hearing the results of someone elses investments. Be extra careful on wet pavement when using program #2. I plan to go back to program #1 for wet road conditions.

Dear JeffsLightning,

OK, great data, thanks very much! So we can see that the Superchip is helping ET's everywhere on the track, in the fist 60 feet, at the 1/8th mile, and at the top end, just as it should. Great! It's very nice to have some hard data, thanks. Say, do you have any idea what the weather conditions were?

Weather was low 80's with about 50 or 60 percent humidity. The track elevation is around 700 ft. I'm not sure. Maybe someones knows what the elevation of Rt 66 in Joilet just out of Chicago. Jeff

OK, thanks Jeff. Sounds like you had very good weather to run in. Just out of curiosity, I'd like to see what 80 degrees and low humidity combined with sea level elevation would do, I'm guessing that would be worth another 2 tenths.

Enjoy!

Jeff,
I live just west of Joliet. If you want, I'll check the elevation with my GPS.

By the way, where did you buy your Lightning?

Sure Wild Bill let me know. I bought the Lightning from Hawkinson Ford in Oak Lawn. Was able to get about 800.00 off the window sticker. I ordered it in Jan. and picked it up the 2nd week in June. Jeff
