99.5 Superchip>>part 2
mike, i got the chip in today and it seems to be a big differance except in the shift firmness. i cant tell much diferance in either position.i dont want it bone jaring but i think it could use a lot more shift feel than what it has now.any one else have this problem.any suggestions ? but dont get me wrong it definately is a great chip it just may need a little fine tuning.
Dear GP,
Hmm, I think I'd wait and accumulate 500-1000 miles with the Superchip before we try changing it. Everyone has commented on the firmness of the shifting, and nobody so far has wanted it any firmer. However, that certainly can be done, there is more line pressure available, and it can be dialed in with a program adjustment.
There shouldn't be any problem telling the difference when you are in Position II. In position I, the transmission shifting is not changed, it is the unmodified factory program. The changes are only in Position II, so I would spend some more time driving it in Position II, and then see what you think. Again, you should have no problems noticing the improved shift characteristics, nobody else has. If you drive it awhile and still feel like you want firmer shifts, we can address it at that point, that would be my recommendation, but that is of course up to you. This is one of those areas where we may really need to talk on the phone, so I can get a good thorough understanding on what you are experiencing, so please feel free to give me a call, or shoot me an email with your number so it's on my dime. Even more important is the fact that I don't get here everyday, maybe only a couple times a week, so I can't respond to you very quickly here.
It's funny, what most people call firm, for me, is not firm enough, but then I've run manual-shift valve bodies on the street, and using something like that will really spoil you for anything else! Maybe you're like me?
Talk to you soon,

mike, i admit i probably should put a few more miles on the truck.as far as firmness goes i think we think a lot alike.after reading some of the other members comments on the firmness i guess i thought it should be a lot firmer.mean while i will give it a few more miles and see how it does.
Dear Blacklight,
You're very welcome, and thanks for your support!

Dear GP,
Yeah, we sounds a lot alike in our shift firmness preferences! I'd suggest putting 600-1000 miles on it, and then let's look at it, but that's strictly up to you. If you want us to look at firming them up more right away, we'll be happy to accomodate you, just let me know!

Dear Rusty,
Congrats on your Superchip installation! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Actually, I'm very jealous of all you Lightning owners, I treid to get one and couldn't. Maybe I'll be able to get one before this Lightning's production stops a few years down the road.
In the meantime, enjoy your new Superchip, and welcome to F150online!

How many miles do you have on each of your Lightning's now? Just curious.....

Mike,
Do you know if the ECM has volatile memory? It seems to me that when I disconnected my battery, the computer went through it's 'learning' process again. Any thoughts.
PS - got the chip in no problem and love it, thanks for the rundown on the install.

Mike - Installed the chip today, following the instructions and even removed the computer bracket to make sure that the bracket lip didn't interfere with the marriage between the chip and computer. I could not get the truck to start in either program. Popped the chip out and voila! She cranked right up. Reinstalled the chip, no dice. Did I get lucky enough to get one of the Lightnings that the Ford boys fiddled with or am I missing something. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, I received the original chip you sent 2nd day air (It took 12 days) and I will be sending it back to you as soon as I get a confirmation on the address. Thanks

Mike - You were absolutely correct, I used a small jeweler's screw driver to remove the remaining coating that I had missed with the scotch brite pad. I really couldn't see the coating until I manually removed. Holy Moly! I was really surprised at the increased performance with the chip. I'm still grinning. You can put me down as another satisfied Super Chip customer! Thanks

Dear Sixpipes,
Hey, another Jimi Hendrix fan, great! UPS did a fine job of losing that original shipment, 12 days for UPS Blue 2-day service is pretty bad!
(Which is of course why we shipped another one out to you overnight)
I enjoyed talking with you today on the phone, and it sounds to me like you just need to clean the edge connector contacts better, particularly on the bottom side. Superchips just started including a piece of Scotch-brite pad with the Superchip to clean those contacts about 6-8 weeks ago, but I have always preferred to do them manually with a small straight-blade screwdriver, scraping back and forth across each contact 3-4 times. The conformal coating is clear, and you really can't see it until you actually start removing it. I've always liked to do them that way, as you can see the coating when it comes off, and you have a better feel for when the contacts are clear of that silicone-based conformal coating. Even at that, once a year or so I will miss a contact, and have the same thing, crank with no start, until I go back and clean the contact I missed.
Please let me know what happens! Like I said when we spoke, I don't get here every day unfortunately, so for faster communications you might want to email or call me, whichever you prefer. At any rate, good luck, and let me know your results!
Cheers,

Dear Sixpipes,
OK, that's great, and I'm very glad to hear it. Like I mentioned earlier, Superchips just started including that piece of Scotch-Brite pad in the last couple of months. For all these years, I have always removed that conformal coating from the contacts of the edge connector using the small straightblade screwdriver that comes in those little jewelers screwdriver sets. It's got a knurled handle, so you get a good grip, it's small, so you can easily reach everywhere without opening the computer up, etc. Most important is the fact that this coating is clear, and you really can't see it until you remove it manually like that, and then you'll see it come off, so you have a better feel (at least, I do)for when the contacts are free of the silicone-based coating, thus establishing good electrical contact. It's actually easier than it sounds, and it takes maybe 5 minutes to prep the edge connector properly.
Enjoy,
