Post rearend gear change

may be a little early but has any one changed to 4.11 gears yet?i figure they have to help off the line starts .i picked up 3 tenths in quarter mile on my mark 8 and it weighed 4100 pounds so i know it will help a 4800 pound truck.

HI!... GP I don't own a LIGHTNING but I am having 4.10 gears installed on TUESDAY in my truck.(read description of truck below) I will post back after the gear change and let you know "the seat of the pants" difference. I will try to give you some 1/4 mile #'s after I attend the MILAN meet on the 18th.

Thumbs up

I have changed mine to a 3:73 from Ford, could not find a 4:10 gears. The 3:73 made a big difference in launch, but the TA Drag Radials made the biggest difference in launch. The 3:73 allow for more HP at the rear wheels, an added increase of about 35 HP as tested on the dyno. From my first try at 326HP to 361 HP as it set now. All factory setting are set to specs, Superchip installed, higher octang fuel added, 3:73 gear, and ram air hood installed with ram air functional. This week end I am going to install Flowmaster mufflers (2) and keep the stock exhaust look.

I didn't know that by changing a rearend gear would give more H.P. to the ground. I guess that is why I am here. Could you post your 1/4 or 1/8 times before and after if you have them. I guess I am going gear shopping tomorrow.

Adding gears does not increase HP.This is fact. All they do is get you into to your powerband sooner. I would like to know how adding 3.73's boosted HP by 35 over the 3.55's. Jeff

ISA
I don't know if you've mentioned it but, what kind of ram-air hood and setup are you using?
Thanks

sorry so many of you only know what you hear. Get a LIFE! anything you do to increase HP to the rear wheels will show up at the REAR WHEELS, and yes a gear will increase rear wheel HP. What on earth do you thing gearing does? just raise RPM. Not to many drag racers here at all. To many pencil pushers with numbers in their head. I will post all of my et's from start to finish just as soon as i am finished playing with this truck. As I said before do not try ant of these things unless you are ready to pay for a mistake. I have even tried 114 oct fuel on the dyno and if I told you what that did you would all be looking for higher paying jobs so you could afford the $4.50 per gallon to run every day. I had thought that by letting you guys know what was happening with all the trials I have been through you could learn from my mistakes, if I make any. Now I see that telling you what each little step I take does is just a waste of time. To many people stilling living in a world where it is their job to find something wrong! To you that asked about the hood, it came from Choo Choo Customs and is made for a F-150. In order to install it on a Lightning the center inside needed to be cut out to clear the supercharger. The air inlet on the hood is in front of the driver towards the rear of the hood and takes a little figuring to get the air to the stock filter box but they have a kit for that. Hood cost $350.00 air kit $90.00. I have not painted mine yet because I may not use it. If I do I will photo the truck with all the options, which I do not want to sell but will tell you how for FREE! Whew! sorry I get so upset. My apologizes to all, but I only tell it like I see, (read) it. I am a person who will try and see for my self. I have been told it will not work before only to find out it will if you do it right

Red face

Hey guys,
I thought this board was suppose to be something that people could write on and post ideas, results, etc... there's no need to get out of hand with the subject! I am by no means a "mediator" here, but this seems to be happening quite alot lately and some of us get tired of reading the ongoing nonsense that goes on.

Just my thoughts...since everyone else has one!

Hey Guys, Sal here. Just thought I'd pass along a bit of info. I noticed that in the 99 FRPP catalog they list 4:10 gears for the Expedition to improve towing. They have a set for the 9.75 rear like our trucks use. It does say that it only fits 97-98 though, I'm not sure why. Maybe I'll see if I can find out what the differance is.

If adding gears increases HP then I have a serious problem with my Cobra. I have went from 3.27's to 3.55's to 3.73's and now I have 4.30's and I have not gain 1 HP on the dyno. Maybe Lightning's are different but I seriousily doubt it. Any posts made here that have erroneous content will be challenged. Their are to many new guys that will believe what they read and then go out a spend their hard earned money for nothing. Anyone is more that welcome to come over to http://www.mustangworld.com/sboard.html www.camaroz28.com http:www3.corral.net/cg/-bin/bbs2/modular.pl or www.musclestang.com
Post the HP gains question and just see how fast you get blown out of the water by people who have done more work on their cars then even me. GEARS DO NOT INCREASE HP. If anyone has any evidence that shows differant please provide it.

Cool

Hey PFA:
Haven't heard from you in a while!
I think it must be this long summer drought and Dennis the Menace. Everyone seems a bit edgy the last month or so, even me.

How did it go with your tranny? Did you ever determine which one you had the first time?

Cool

Gear ratios do not change rear wheel horsepower. It's a matter of physics. Trucks with the same horsepower will accelerate at different rates based on the gear ratios and the engine characteristics involved. It may appear that one truck is making more power than the other. There will be a gear ratio that gets your truck down the 1/4 mile faster than the others. This is not a factor of horsepower, but rather a factor of efficiency. -- Jeff, have you noticed any differences in your 1/4 mile times with the high flow air system?
