Unhappy Rust Issues?

So I have a 2001 Lightning that I bought from a guy who moved to California from Boston. The truck was with him in Boston for about two years so it has some slight rusting underneath the truck. The bottom of the truck bed, the joints of the trailer hitch, the diff cover, etc etc. Most of it appears to be just cosmetic, but could this be a problem in the future? What are my options and is this even something I should be worrying about? I have heard about products like rust bullet and someone even suggested gettin the body taken off the frame and having it dealt with that way (too expensive I think). Has anyone had any experience with this?

Tony

Its not that big of a problem, my truck has a little bit of "surface'' rust under it, and it only has 10,000 miles and has been driven in the rain one time. If it bothers you bad I would just scuff it real good and prime with Rust Oleum or Dupli Color primer and then paint it satin black. I did this to my Ranger and it lasted two years and still looked good the day I sold it.

I've used this on my offroading jeeps to old show cars to my '69 mustang.

It is a 3 part epoxy, the first part cleans the metal, the second part nuetralizes the rust, and the third part is the paint. Paint right over the rust, and it will NEVER be a problem again.

Oh yeah, you can't scrape it off with a screwdriver.

Rust

Thanks for the suggestions. I think i'll try that triple coat stuff. Any recommendations on how to remove the rust before I start painting this stuff on? I was thinking one of those little black and decker Mouse sanders.

A wire wheel for the end a drill can be bought for about $7-8.00 dollars at Home Depot or Lowes and they work very well.

With Por-15 you don't take the rust off. You paint right over it. Por-15 is some tough stuff. The only stuff I would use personally. -Mat-

you still need to knock off the flakes on the surface, but yeah it is good stuff. don't get it on you hands, it doesn't like to come off of ANYTHING.

dude, you're going to be going down the road one day and the floor is just going to fall right out from under you. you'll have a flintstones truck! j/k i cannot think of tasks i hate more than removing rust. which is why i don't do it. that's surface rust that will take many many years under *normal* conditions to cause any harm. now i would suggest you check your rotors for abnormal pitting from salty conditions. i had a problem with an SUV that came out of Jersey having major pitting on the rotors.
