If I shoot a plug, roughly how much is the insert job cost?

That issue still worries me.

EXACTLY!

I heard you can install them with the heads still on the engine, but I'd be afraid of shavings getting in there!

I charge 1 to 1.5 hrs shop labor depending on the cylinder and $8 bucks an insert. This can be done with the head on and I do not leave any debree. I use a bore scope to make sure of that. I can usually repair the coil pack and have you running in about 35 to 45 min.
Hope that helps.

How exactly do you drill and tap without creating any chips?

He said he does not "leave" any debree.

I'm guessing if there is any, a telescopic magnet could take it out and then re-check the hole with bore scope???

I'm a retard, so dont listen to me... total guess...

These heads are aluminum - magnets don't work. You pack the reamer and tap flukes with grease and it traps 95+% of the chips/shavings and the rest (if any) can be cleaned up with a thin walled tube stuck down the spark plug hole and hooked to a shop vac - very effective.

I have the older kit 4412 and use 44185 inserts. The new kit 4412E is the one you want.
