Pre 1999 Lightnings
Pre 1999 Lightnings
Sorry guys but I am not up to speed with the earlier F150 Lightnings. Maybe many others are not either. Don't see many of them around and for some reason they remained somewhat obscure (to me).
Could anyone gives me the specs on the earlier Lightnings, engine, body type, what Ford modified and general performance?

Marcus, GP,
Appreciate the performance stats on the "old" Lightnings. Have never seen anyone post it before. With the times you related I too believe Ford "sandbagged" the numbers on their engines as low 15s is certainly not anything to laugh at.

The 93-95 Lightning ran a 351HO that was unique to the truck. It was basically a 351 with a GT40 package, true dual exhaust, and factory headers. It used a diesel 4R100 trans packed into a reinforced gas version case (the diesel case wouldn't fit). The 8.8 rear axle was also unique to the truck, as the center section also had reinforcing ribs. The truck used a modified 4wd frame for more rigidity. They ran 275/60/17 performance truck tires (an unheard of size for that year).
They were rated at 240hp, and 340lb ft of torque. Stock performance numbers were 0-60 in 7.2 seconds, the 1/4 mile in 15.2-15.4 seconds (the 14 second stockers were rare), 60-0 in 136ft and they would pull .88G's on the skidpad.
The '93 trucks did not have clear coated paint, so they would run into paint problems. Also, the trans was less reliable. For '94 they got some transmission upgrades, the mid year introduction of the middle seat option, the clear coated paint, and the addition of white to the colors (only red and black were available in '93). For '95 they got additional transmission upgrades.
My '94 ran 15.6 at Firebird raceway (known to be about .5 slow) with 1200 miles on the clock. I sold the truck with 116,500 trouble free miles on her............... and have missed her every day since.
My '94 is the reason we have the '01 (56,000 trouble free miles so far).
Hope that helped.
