Any idea what would cause this to happen?

i had the same thing happen to me wile i was offroading, died going 30 mph and all dashes theft light blinks, i checked my fuses and it was the feul injector maf fuse that blew, my home made heat shield had rubed threw one of my maf sensor wires and blew the fuse, i would check all your fuses in the engine compartment, good luck

If it looks like this ----------, it is the factory "worn out vehicle" indicator.
In which case you must get rid of it and purchase a new vehicle.

I have a Pyhton alarm system and both keys it looks like the chip was taken out. Both have pieces missing. My fuel psi gage goes rite to 50# when you turn the key on maybe its the fuel pump relay I read that it is tied in to the odometer. Fuel psi was never that high before.

if your alarm has remote start, its possible that they took the chip out of the key and placed it inside the steering column permanantely so the remote start thinks the key is in there all the time. This was the way it used to be done before they came out with bypass modules. good luck

I don't think the relay would cause that. I lost one of my relays and I wasn't pulling enough pressure. Granted there are two. I could only get to about 32#'s. I never had a problem with my display though. For whatever that is worth.

Check all your fuses. The fuel pump fuse, abs fuse, etc. The ones under the hood sometimes cause this to happen. No blown fuses, than it could be a fried processor.

I had the exact same problem as your are experiencing and thought it was chip related among other things and it turned out being a bad coil pack!

I had my ecm reflashed, changed this, changed that and Ford confirmed that the problem ended up being the #7 coil pack screwing up "ONLY UNDER LOAD" and that would cause my L to turn off and I would see the (---------) dashes of death!

(ohh also forgot to mentioned the alternator crapped out as well)

Have ford test the coil packs out bro! I would check there first!!!

(you can do search under username "Rob_02lightning" and look for the thread he started up for me regarding the exact same problem as you are experiencing)

Hope this helps and saves your some grief!,

Chris

edit: the dashes (---------) represents the computer loosing communication / temp mem loss (if I remember correctly) and it requires a full key cycle to restart the vehicle and resume as normal... tuners step in... I think I got it somewhat right??!?!??

btw, here is a link to the thread I mentioned above:

I fixed it !!!!!!!!!!! WoooHooooo, I pulled all the fuses out for the PCM under the dash and in the engine compartment.... none where blown It must of been a loose fuse under the dash. I turned the key on and the odometer was fine, no blinking theif lite or overdrive and fuel psi was nornmal. Started the truck without the chip and started rite up....... Installed the chip and started rite up. Also I messed with my plunger on my alarm system for the hood it was alittle loose maybe it was that. Thanks for all you help and ideas to get it fixed.... I am just glad I didn't have to get it towed to the stealership and get rakked over the coals. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark
