Problems with electric fan and A/C not playing nice

The harness that I have with mine, had 2 relays = a green one and a black one. The green one is the 'regular speed' relay. I'm replacing it with a 40 amp relay and socket that I got from an electrical supply place along with a replacement diode that I got from Radio Shack.

Ok I had a black one and a blue one. When I unplugged the black one the manual switch went dead, so I figure that one was the high speed relay. I unplugged the blue one. Is the diode part of the relay or is that something else I should be looking for?

The diode is in part of the harness that goes to the relay - in the LFP kit the green wire goes to the temp sensor in the block. Trace that wire back to the relay plug and you'll see another wire that joins with it at the plug - that's the ground wire from the AC relay (whenever the ac relay grounds and activates, the same ground signal is passed to the elec fan relay to activate it). Right there where the 2 wires hook up at the relay plug - the one from the AC relay actually has the diode right there (this diode blocks the ground from the temp sensor from being felt on the AC relay and making the AC kick on). Here's a crude drawing of that relay and it's wiring:

That makes sense. Thanks for your help! I may get this thing working yet! One more question. Can I test the relay I pulled by switching it with the manual "High speed" relay or are they different internally?
