torque converter questions

how big of a job is a torque converter install on our trucks? IOW, how many larbor hrs would a competent shop charge for install?

also, how would a 2400 RPM stall affect towing ability? would I be ok with that stall speed towing 4,000 lbs on a regular basis? (I have a rich tow tune and run a 2lb pulley when towing to be safe)

After much testing, I have come to the sad conclusion that my truck is stalling at too low of an RPM at launch to take effect of my Hoosier QTPs given my truck's power. it will not launch any quicker than with my F1s no matter what. guess i'm the unlucky recipient of a "weak" stock converter.

thanks

I wouldn't think a loose convterter would be good for towing, too much heat build-up.

I have not messed with a converter on a Lightning but it should not be much different than any other aod tranny. It will take you longer to uninstall and install the tranny but the converter should not take long just pulling off the old and putting on the new. We actually did these in class today, took apart a aod tranny and put back together and stuck it on the dyno. The converter prob took a whole 2 min to take off and put the new one on if that long. It may be diff on the L but hope that helped. Good luck.

With my brother and myself "tag-teaming" a Lightning we could do a swap in well under 2 hours. This is on a lift with the proper equipment. I would say to someone who has not done it before or is working on there back(I would never), guess at around 3-4 times as much time. Some more, some less. I like to take my time doing things so I know they are done right.
Make sure you have a good amount of fluid handy, the converter holds A LOT!
As far as the stall and towing, if you do it, I would suggest a tranny temp gauge to keep an eye on things, maybe upgrade from the factory cooler as well.
You are going to increase heat in there. A 2400 stall is not too bad though.
If you are looking for the best of both worlds(track and towing) maybe step it down once more and have someone custom build you a 2200 stall>???
Any GOOD converter company should do a free stall adjust for you if you are not happy with what you get.
If you need any more help just ask or shoot me an email. -Mat-
