cleaning my intercooler...need help

Hello everyone,

This is going to be a major project for me b/c I hardly know much about tinkering with the motor.. I've been reading and researching the post on doing this and it doesn't seem so bad.. I just need some tips and pointers on how to make this easy..Also give me some info on what not to do..I don't want to screw this up...Do I need to drain the intercooler coolant? I've printed the instructions on what to do but just needed more security in doing it..

Thanks a lot..

1. Do not get any of your brake/carb cleaner on the rotors: teflon coating will get stripped.

2. When you lift out the i/c, will need to drain the coolant so you can clean it well

3. Buy some rubber caps/plugs: needed when you disconnect the i/c coolant lines (or have rags/towels ready)

4. to save time (and risk of mix-ups), simply remove the 2 nuts that hold down the bundle of wires/connections from the EGR tube. Then lift the entire mass as one unit instead of disconnecting all the connections on the right side individually.

If #4 is not clear, give me your e-mail addy and I can take some pictures of the 2 nuts I am talking about.

5. You may need a helping hand when it is time to lift out the I/C: rear bolt (passenger side) is loooong and will snag the firewall.

Take your time, take pictures before you remove anything (or label) so you have something to go back to. Triple check all fittings/connections when you are done: one vacuum line will mess up everything

This is the HOW-TO I used as reference:

BTW, I opted to reuse the gaskets and bolts. have some extra coolant nearby to top-off the I/C reservoir when you are done. Good luck!

Everytime I've checked mine it's been spotless , so I never had to actually pull it and clean it. But this is my "How To" on removing the S/C.
It will help, especially since everyone chipped in and gave feed back.

It's old, but I still use it everytime I pull the SC....

Mine looked good on the top

mine looked good on the top but when I pulled it out the bottom was horrible. The inside was very bad also, I used 12 cans of carb cleaner. I did it at 50,000 and that was its first cleaning. I run 16 psi on an eaton and was getting more than the usual dose of oil through the IC. I didnt touch the super charger after I got it off and I did notice a coating of oil on the rotors. I also left the passenger side corner IC bolt in the IC as I removed it. I couldnt get it out without destroying the fire wall to do it. As I lifted the IC out I had an extra hand slide the bolt up with it and out at the same time and we put it back in the same way. I took my time and done this over 2 days and all went well. Take your time and you'll be ok.
