Tie Rod Wear Help

As many of you know, Ford sent out a letter about tire rod inspections back a few months ago.

For the past month or so i've been getting a wicked knocking noise when i start and stock, or when going up and down my driveway.

I finally got under there to try and find out where the hell it's comming from

What i found is i can grab ahold of the tie rods on both side by hand and rotate the front and back. When they get to the point they stop, they make a knocking noise which is exactly what i'm hearing.

The boots aren't broken or cracked and there's no grease fitting anywhere to lube.

They don't exibit the characteristics of the verticle and horizontal play as described in the letter, but they are definetely making a noise.

I'm guessing they are junk.

Anyone know the part numbers to the inner and outter tie rod ends and approx price?

The letter I got indicates:

97-02 F-150
97-99 F-250
97-02 Expedition
98-02 Navigator
2002 Blackwood

There was a 4 step "Tie-Rod Inspection Procedure" on a single page along with a letter from ford. Let me know if you need it - I can scan it sometime this weekend and send it on over.

Herb

PS - Tallimca - check you U-joints too. Clunking when changing speeds or directions is often a sign of worn needles and caps in the U-joints.

yeah

i thought of that and my old man said that same thing but it's definetely commng from the front end and when i went under there and grabbed the tie rods, there's no question about it.

Once i change those, i can see what's making anymore noises.
