First Stage of Mods

I'd like to get some advice in regards to the performance parts that I plan on getting for my bone stock 2000 L.

The parts that I'm considering after talking with the major vendors are:

A Must...
-SCT Excalib w/ custom tune
-Air intake with 80mm to 90mm adapter with 90 mm MAF
-4 or 6 lb pulley (interchangable)
-Clunk washers!!!!!

Can't decide...
-swap out the 3.55 and go with 3.73 (have a local guy that is good and can do this at a very reasonable price)
or
-get Chikenears FTVB (does it make the shifting a whole lot better than stock ?)
or
-FAB 1 piece Throttle body and the corresponding plenum

What is the most bang for your bucks when it comes to the latter portion.
I've read the postings of going from 3.55 to 3.73 isn't all that dramatic, but it will give me that nice feeling that I'm not left behind when compared to the 2001 and above Ls.

Thanks!

I'm

Cool, sounds like I had the basics covered. Perhaps, I'll hold off on the gears until it's the last thing to do.

Who should I go with for porting the eaton?
I think Mike T was telling me that if I wanted to run 6lb pulleys I really need to port the eaton so I don't damage anything.

Also, do you really notice a big improvement with the FTVB install?
Is this a difficult installation?

Thanks

Oh, I got the L back 2000 but didn't have the time to upgrade it since all my $$ and attention went to my TT300Z,which is now gone. I spent so much $$ on that project that thinking about it, makes me sick. I'll never blueprint an engine for titanium pistons and rods or mess with turbos that had ceramic ball bearing! I'm done with rice, well until 2007 when I plan on getting my hands on the next generation of Toyota Supras.

HUGE improvement with the FTVB. One of the best mods. Porting the Eaton is really a great mod if your not looking to upgrade to a different charger. If you want to port...there are a few different ones. Check out the vendors page and go from there.

From what I've heard, the FTVB is not terribly difficult to install, just messy when the oil in the pan starts gushing out (due to lack of a drain plug). Everyone seems to get the FTVB with the 4x4 tranny pan which includes a drain plug....

just get a nail or drill and drill a small hole in the pan. This will make not so messy. and buy a 4x4 pan they are cheap

Just to throw my 2 cents in here....

I installed the FTVB - the difference in shifts is like night and day...the truck's shifts are a LOT more firm, and a lot quicker (I also used my Predator to firm the shifts up tad...). I agree that this is one of the best mods for the price - and with the instructions that are included, you almost cant go wrong unless you're really trying to.

Ive also checked into port/polish jobs for the S/C, and keep looking back to Stiegemeyer's (sp?). They've been very helpful and quick to respond to my questions....maybe a little pricier than some, but definately worth a look. Their polishing job is pretty nice too - already starting to save my $$ for this one. Here's the link:

Great, I guess I'll add in the FTVB in as the first part of the upgrade mod package. Better hurry and get my order in with Chick before June 6th when the offer expires. Is it really necessary to by the 4x4 pan as I have been looking at how most people do the install and they punch out the old pan to drain the fluid and then proceed to do the swap. I talked to Andy at Chick. and he stated no, but I haven't seen any step by step that actually resuses the old pan. Any help or advice appreciated.

you can use the old pan. the reason everyone changes to the 4X4 pan is it holds more fluid and has a drain plug. i went with the moroso pan it holds even more fluid is made of aluminum and has a drain plug.the FTVB is a def must have mod.

Ok, sounds like getting a 4x4 pan should be the way to go. I was trying to save some money and not spend for the pan but in the long run this might cause some headaches on my part.

The FTVB sounds like a must have mod to add into the L!!!

Dont forget to get a 4x4 filter when u order that pan. The 4x4 uses a different filter because of the deeper sump
