Different Engine noises after OIL change
Different Engine noises after OIL change
Hello !
Today my Lightning got his first oil exchange.
Because there is no possibility to get the 5 W 20 oil in germany i´ve taken the
full synthetic 5W 30.
After the change i drove home listened to the engines sound.
There was a big difference ! It´s difficult to tell how it was in english ( in german too)
There is a deeper tone rumble/knocking which comes from the bottom of the engine (louder -head under car).
I slowly drove back to the workshop and talked to their master (a friend of me).
He checked the engines sound from all sides.
Result:
He told me that this should be the "Hydrostössel" (german word !) and it wouldn´t be a problem. That part makes the noise because of the thinner oil and is to hear because of the Aluminium-Body.
He said the noise of this part could be gone several days later. If not and if i have a problem with this knocking i have to get the 5W 20 oil.
Some of you guys taking 5W 30 also. Have you heard a difference too ??
Greetings,
André

Hello Andre'
About 50% of the people say they hear a change in sound after there first oil change.
Some of us think it is piston slap cause by the forged pistion skirts.
I did not have it in my truck ????
As far as I know it doesn't hurt anything.
Only someone who really loves his or her truck would notice.

Nothing to worry about providing you have the proper oil and filter in it.
I must have read it a hundred times before
Then it happen to me
Since then I've prob read it a hundred times more
ALWAYS THE FIRST OIL CHANGE
Let me guess, it ticks when you start it,
It ticks more when it's cold
and it ticks fairly long when cold
One has to wonder what the hell Ford REALLY puts in there the first time, hehehehehehe
The filter plays a HUGE PART, Sal taught me that one. ; o )
If you used a Fram Filter, jack it up tommorrow, take it off,
throw it in the garbage can, get a good filter and add more oil.
It is very important to have that ball, or spring, or check valve thingy in your filter. It has to do with not allowing oil to drain out of the filter over night. When it happen to me, I used Fram, I took it off the next day and got a Mobil 1 Filter, and it got much better.
I'm very happy to report mine didn't pick up ANY SOUNDS after my first oil change on the PSP Motor WOO HOO.............
Ok so my pulleys or something else sounds like hell, but....hehehe

Oh BTW
I'm using 5w 30
I use to use 5w 20
I think I even tried the 0W Ford stuff on the orig motor
So far only 5w30 REG oil in the built Motor, Sal wanted me to wait longer if I go Syn (still only got 600+, but believe me it's been through HELL already, hehehehe.......

I've always been told to fill up your oil filter first befor installing it (it takes about 1/2 Quart of oil) it helps in the start up to keep the motor from ticking so bad.

Hello Andre,
Iv'e had 2 L's (2000 and 2001) and both have made these souinds after an oil change (factory oil and filter). I just
changed the oil and filter on my 2001 at 40000 miles
and of course the knocking sounds come....my experience is that these sounds can continue for 3-6 days after the oil change...and then subside...there is nothing to worry about
Andre...it's just a eccentric part of some Lightnings. I also always "precharge" the filter before placing in on the block.
Good luck with your truck...

As for your ticking, what oil filter did you use? The wrapping on cold starts is usually from either having a filter without an anti drainback valve, or just that it's so cold, the oil takes a little extra time to flow to the timing chain adjusters, which are hydraulically pumped up, so you get some timing chain clatter for a moment.
