New Street Racing Law
FYI: Just read in today's newspaper that a new law is in the process of being passed here in Florida that will result in up to 5 years in prison PLUS confiscation of your vehicle if you are caught street racing.
The article said the new legislation is a result of so many deaths here in Florida over the past year that were a result of street racing.

Trust me, I see the news and it insn't very often that a fatality happens from actual racing. Maybe they would be better served (politicians) by using their political power/sway to get more drag tracks in more areas if it's such a big problem. You won't ever see that happening though. In Miami, the nearest 1/4 track is 100 miles away (200 miles round trip). That certainly doesn't help the urge to do it "on the streets."
I also feel that "street racing" out in the middle of the boondocks where there is no traffic and no side streets is a little different (dare I say more responsible?) than racing on the crowded city streets. I think those curcumstances should be taken into consideration (but they aren't).
IMO, what they are doing is giving potential "subjects" the incentive to run, rather than pull over, because the stakes are so much higher. But then again, the politicians would have to "think" and that is something they are simply unwilling to do. Knee jerk works much better.
BTW, it is already a misdemeanor here. I tell you, make it a felony with losing your car or license, and they will have California style/frequency car chases on their hands.
Bottom line, the politicians (as usual) cause worse problems than what they THINK they are solving. But then again, it wasn't about problem-solving in the first place, it was about; "Hey, look what I'm doing for you."

That's a load of crap, about so many deaths. It's just a grandstanding opportunity for politicians to get their names out there as if they're doing something really constructive for the good of all.

So what is exactly considered street racing? If I am stopped at a red light, and there is say a Cobra next to me, and when the light turns green, we both punch it until the speed limit or 10 above, is that considered street racing?

heck.......In california if you get caught street racing, you ride will be impounded for 30 days, go to jail for at least 48 hours and then plead your case. The fines are usually $2,000+ and its on your driving record for seven years and for sure your insurance goes up the roof.
If you are caught just watching it or in the wrong place at the wrong time, the new law here still can fine that person $500.00 for the first time and/or up to 6 months in jail..........
One of my buddy get caught with his ricer ride without a cat, and he was fined over $2,000 for a non smog legal approved equipment.
they are very tough over here............
