The article said the new legislation is a result of so many deaths here in Florida over the past year that were a result of street racing.

That is just crazy.
Yeah the laws are pretty crazy nowadays but there is ALOT of this stuff going on around here. Some of the more organized stuff around here is actually pretty safe IMHO but some of the other stuff (mostly ricers) is totally out of hand.
A few years ago I would run anything that crossed my path but now the stakes are so high and I have matured alot also, I dont run anything that usually crosses my path. The street racing around here has turned into its own culture almost.

heck.......In california if you get caught street racing, you ride will be impounded for 30 days, go to jail for at least 48 hours and then plead your case. The fines are usually $2,000+ and its on your driving record for seven years and for sure your insurance goes up the roof.
If you are caught just watching it or in the wrong place at the wrong time, the new law here still can fine that person $500.00 for the first time and/or up to 6 months in jail..........
One of my buddy get caught with his ricer ride without a cat, and he was fined over $2,000 for a non smog legal approved equipment.
they are very tough over here............

we have a big one around here.....heck the cops will even run you soemtimes at the one light but in all honesty people come from all around to race out here
You know what most people seem to forget is that drag racing started on the street.
My old man did it and so do I!
Does that make it right?
No!
However, like any thing else there is a time and place for every thing.
We don't do it in residential areas, we don't do it where kids are playing, and we don't do it in traffic.
Heck most of the races I have been to have been better organized than some of the sanctioned races I've been to. I know they are more serious and it's any where from 500. to 5,000. bucks depending.
Peace,
Suavy

heck we have spot that we race that has more vht down than the local strip and we start on time on weekend nights unlike the strip
you could stick people in jail for life for street racing, its still not going to stop it. its just going to fill up the jails with people who dont belong there. everyone i bet has gotten into some street tangle at some point. do you think its fair that you sit 5 years in jail because of it?
Another thing we don't need is the extra testosterone this new law will give to many of the already overzealous cops that wander out to the boondock "street races" just because they know the schedule, instead of going after, hmmm, murderers, rapists and drug dealers?? What a concept!
I remember being out in the middle of nowhere, and the troopers came in (5.0 Mustangs back then) all pumped up, hauling a$$ and then slid sideways coming to a stop. It would have been great to have that on video and turn it over to the media, with a little suggestion that the cops are a perfect example of being exempt from the law. BTW, nobody was actually racing at the time they busted, and nobody was even trying to run or leave.
Then you have the cops speeding everywhere, using their emergency lights to avoid stop lights, and generally showing their arrogance on obeying the same laws that they lecture us about, as if they are "holier than thou."
You want to know how I really feel?
