Question Which side goes lean? (Tuners)

Gonna be getting a Wideband A/F Gauge which side have you all seen go lean 1st .This is a stupid Q probably but how did you drill the hole in your headers can it be done while there still on the truck just a little concern about scraps of medal blowing around in there.
Thank you for any info.

Mine lost #5 as many I have read about have. That would match up with the typical recommendation for driver's side bung for WBO2.

As for drilling, drill a smaller pilot first, then pack the flutes of the larger bit with heavy grease to help trap the chips. You can fish in the pipe with a magnet after or place magnets around the hole while drilling - the chips will collect on the magnets, rather than going down the hole.

SS bung shouldn't be a problem. I would think that Summit or Jeg's would have them for $10 or so. Might even be worth doing both sides so you have it available for tuning/diagnostics etc.

Drivers side is the one that "leans out first" If you have any fuel delivery problems the drivers side is the first to lean out. Actually #7 if you want to be specific; design of our fuel rail to thank for that one.

Do some searching and you will see the man is 100% correct.
Always the back two on the Drivers Side. So far each time for me, it was #7 and or the neighbor #8 (back one drivers side) *$&$*$$)#@*$(@#$%(#$%(#$%(#$%(#$

Twice so far "AND" it appears I cooked one tonight

From: Colorado,
Is (was) it just a fuel delivery problem or was it also related to temperature.
There is a scrap of info floating around my brain about the water jacket related to the interior heating plumbling.
Something about the water is short cycling and not going to the radiator.
It comes off that side of the head and and is returned to soon.

Something about pluging that water port even's out the flow and the head temperature.

Like the higher head temp on the back drivers side causes a difference in the fuel mixture for that one or two cylinders.

I should have stopped sooner
Maybe this comment will remind someone else of the real story...

I dont think I would use the term "all my problems", and nothing to be scared of, hopefully it'll never happen to you.
BUT just know if you constantly push the limits you will end up cooking a plug or 5 "eventually".
And usually "there is" a reason.

The first time I cooked plugs was due to "1" fill of Amoco Fuel,
obviouly it was bad, hours later I cooked 3 plugs (all on the drivers side) The truck was only @10-15 weeks old, fuel filter was flled with crud ( I cut it open and checked)

Drivers side (in order as they were taken out)

Then I went 3 racing season with the next set of plugs, end of 02, all of 03, all of 04.

Then cracked # 7 nov of last year (04) on the last pass of the season.

That was a new Chip and Program never used before and NOT dyno tuned. I threw A LOT of power at it, and A LOT of Timing at it, "and for the first time", I should not have. "I asked" the tuner to step it up, and "I pushed it" more than I should have.

Today MAY HAVE something to do with me throwing everything at it "when I DEF should NOT have" (rolleyes)

I'm not in a good mood, and actually quite depressed thinking about another plug change, (dont have a clue when I'll fit that in either) so I'll leave it there for now......

BTW

There does seem to be a related issue here too, A MAJOR ONE.
#7 Bearing is also the usual one to go first
AND THATS THE ONE THAT WE FOUND FRUCKED UP ON MINE

Now that I think about it #5 plug is def my number 3 choice.
I cooked one up top there with the 3 plug melt down, and when I changed the orig Plugs, I found this in the first hole on the Drivers
Side.

if we're counting the drivers side as 5 6 7 8, I def vote 7 8 5
in that order, and have heard that MANY TIMES BEFORE

G, maybe your on to something ????
Thanks Jeff, and Yes I'll report my findings : o (
I always speak um the truth, he he

Bob
I was suppose to Spray on the Dyno tonight, so I went and filled up a bottle at lunch time and figured why not test it first on the street. BUT only 150 HP

Lets just say even at 40 MPH, 600+ HP is just too much for F-1's, especially mine.
I know, I know.....
but hey, I got a reputation to keep up

It'll be fine, Sal drove it afterwards and still had some fun in it,
it's running strong and idling great (which is weird), but at WOT I got a little spudder, I prob took a tip off a plug and it's still firing fine at idle, but once you get into the Boost it just freaks out ???

But Hey, it still convinced a customer that was there to open his wallet and order a built motor, and a S/C for his mustang, hehehehe
He thought it was the best thing since slice bread.
His exact words were, that does it I'm convinced, hehehehe
We obviously didn't put it on the dyno like that, Sal is crazy busy right now so I left and will have to deal with it hopefully this weekend.

Sorry Bob, I totally stole your post, : o (
I'm going now, I promise ......
