Can we use 90 octane?

Just wondering if anyone has used 90 octane gas in their lightnings? Maybe with a can of octane boost? Right now gas prices here are around 2.20 for 90 and freakin 2.50 for 93. I live at just about dead-even sea level also.

Even if it is possible why would you do that to your truck to save 6 bucks per tank full?

I did it on my previous lightning with a tune from Mike Troyer ONLY BECAUSE IN JAMAICA 90 OCTANE IS THE HIGHEST WE HAVE. I would not do it to my truck unless it was my only option. Just my 2 cents.

It would cost more in octane booster than just buying the damn gas. A bottle of booster will raise your octane like .1.

How did your truck run on it? Good/Bad?

Actually yes. Octane boosters like 104 Octane Booster are rated in TENTHS of a point. So 2-3 points is .2 - .3 of one point, not even noticeable.

why not mix it between the two? I have done that just fine I use 93 all the time but sometimes if I have half a tank I will fill up with 89 if I know I'll be doing a lot of highway cruising.

I thought that it ran pretty good because it was the first time I had driven a truck with so much power. I did however get detonation at 110 MPH. However here in Cayman I run a tune for 93 octane and all I can say is . I has so much power over my other lightning. However with that being said I would never run 90 octane in a L if it is not a must.

I agree with what Leeann said"I'd rather be broke"

It comes down to simple cost-benefit analysis:

You already know that stock, these trucks require 91 octane.
You already know that any mods will likely up the required octane.
You already know there is a history of detonantion related rod failures.
You already know that lower octane increases risk of detonation.

You may not know that the low end of a rod failure repair will set you back ~$4000, but likely more like $6000 to $9000.

If you have a detonation related rod failure, I hope that it comes after the required 1000 tanks of gas needed to offset the cost full cost of the decision to run sub-par gas, against the OEM recommendation.

If your up for the gamble the the above odds, it's your truck. Having suffered a rod failure while running 93 octane, I personally don't recommend scrimping on the quality of your fuel.

BTW - do a search on the boards for "tolulene" and you'll find a wealth of info abaot the required ratios of addative mix for various octane levels. the "104+ Octane Boost" cans are a waste of money.

If you do want to play with octane 'brewing' use the bulk solvents to do the job more cost effectively.

Even with this, I think the cost would be higher than using the higher octane fuel to start with, unless your family business is paint or solvent wholesale.

Couldn't have said it better than Herb

WHY would you want to use less than recommended ???
And with Mods, it would defeat the purpose of having them ???

And to make it safe, you would have to back out timing,
and you'd lose BIG TIME HP there

Here in Long Island NY, 93 Octane is now 2.48 - 2.53 a Gallon
too, so I understand your fustration. But it's the LOWEST octane that has EVER gone in mine (93), and AMOF I still run that with a mix of 100 Octane pretty much 24/7 now, JUST FOR ADDED SAFETY.

Your better off driving it less than hurting the motor, or taking all the power away. But if you have a multi chip in it, I guess you could consider building an economy program for low timing/low octane ????

Just do what I do and charge the living schitt out of everything, including gas

Well like I said, thanks for the answers, I do appreciate them.

As for mods..............I have none.

As for frustration with gas prices.............oh hell yeah, lots of frustration. ( You mean you guys don't know it's a conspiracy??)

Throwing rods due to inadequate fuel octane levels.........now I know what the hell that means, thus keeping the ol' addage "you learn something new everyday" alive.
