thnder - my thoughts as well on the aftermarket covers.

I used Dupli-Color stuff on these -

Adhesion promoter for plastics (its a clear primer - made to stick to plastic and have paint stick to it),

followed by two coats of Silver Textured Metalic (for the cast look),

then then two coats of the super High Temp Blue with ceramic (more for the 'perfect' color than then need for heat protection).

The 'fins' are just a metalic silver paint rolled on and,

I will likely shoot a couple coats of flat clear to 'seal' everything up.

Iwas a bit worried about the paint sticking so I sanded the cover with 400 after cleaning it, then shot on the adhesion promoter. The paint held up fine against the peeling of the masking tape.

I'm out far less than $20, so I'm not too concerned with a lost investment and with them being so far down, they don't have to look perfect all the time - this is "background bling". My idea is to make it look like the factory could have done it - but bad-*** factory - like the GT.

I can get a shoot of the cans for anyone looking for the actual paint codes I used.

Unfortunately, the testing phase for durability will have to wait until May sometime.

I'll post numbers and pictures tonight when I get home.

I'm "working" now

The aluminum paint (the top coat on the ribs) is just an off the shelf little can from Home Depot. The rest are real Dupli-Color automotive paints.

Hmm, now that I think about, I wonder if the $25 chrome trim mod we used for the 01+ grills would work here too.

HA HA HA

Now that Da Bolt is back from the body shop and toned down, I WILL BE THE KING OF CHROME TAPE!!

Sorry - no chrome tape in this engine bay. Although I do think it would look good on my grill!

OK - here's the stuff

The part numbers are:

Adhesion Promoter - CP 199
Metalic Texured Silver - MX 102
Ceramic High Heat Blue - DH 1612

(these all came from Auto Zone)

The rib paint is:
Rustoleum Amarican Accects Metalic Finish Silve 7955
(this came from Home Depot)

The silve rib paint DOES rub off a bit, so I will need to clear over the whole thing.

Oh come on Mike - I'm just jackin' with you

Actually the red would be cool. I was originally thinking about color matching my blower and covers after seeing what Superford did, but my L is True Blue. Under the hood, that just looks black, so that wouldn't work too well.

Everytime I see the GT - WOW - it just looks so cool! So I though I could do something similar and still compliment the dark blue body color.

The red would look sweet as well - there is a shade of red in the same Dupli-Color ultra high heat line that would have the same sheen and color depth that my blue has.

The base color of texture REALLY adds aot to the look. You can't see it so well in the photos, but the texture is dead-nuts on compared to the GT motor.

Do the red - like I said in my first post - I am interested in opinion, but they don't affect mine - my truck is what I want - I'm just sharing ideas and try to step out of the box a bit.

Try the paint technique on a spare chunck of bakalite or plastic and see how you like it!

Are the other 2 spray cans heat resistant? If not, that's gonna peel like a ****.

I thought about that aspect Tampa - then I had a Jack and Coke and ignored it

I figure that if the automotive enamel (body paint) can hold up (ala Superfords covers), this stuff can too.

The covers are also quite thick and, even after long drives, I've never had them get scary hot.

Will be interested if they do hold-up, I'll have some new project for next year to think about. Nice work!

Thanks Tampa,

I'll be sure to photo-doc the assembly and installation. I've got some ides for the engine bay too. I'll see if they work out as well.

I'm curious to see just how much the covers are going to be hidden under the web of junk under the hood. I put about 1000 miles per month on the L (when it doesn't have a rod it the oil pna, that is), so the actual test of endurance should be around June/July.
