Problem with spare tire holder Anyone else have problems

I can't get my spare tire holder down to get the spare tire back on. It feel like it is all bound up and is half way down and swinging in the air. It will go back up but does not come back down. So what can I do to fix this.

HI!... The 1ST year I owned my truck I had my dealer replace my spare tire winch 6 times under warranty. Everytime I went to the track, I would drop my spare. When I would go to put it back up it would get jammed half way and would not go up or down. I would always have to cut the cable to take it off. The last one the dealer gave me I took it in the box and never had them install it. I still have it somewhere! LOL! After going through a tour of the OAKVILLE plant I see why the spare tire winches fail so much. They install the spare tire and then it drags the tire by the cable down the assemble line.

Mine did the same thing. I took it out for now, I run my spare tires in winter. I will get one from a junk yard or find someone selling one when I put my normal tires back on.

I can't beleive they would let it drag the tire down the line. That's just asking for trouble. If they want to test them so they are built Ford Tough, seems like there would be a better way.

There *uckin* spare tire holders are the reason I had to fix my endgate. I was trying to unwind the damn thing on the side of the road, it wouldn't come down and I slammed my wheel wrench in to my tailggate I was so mad . I think that was the madest I have been in years was that night.

They can put a man on the moon but they can't build a wheel lifter. Its just stupid

This is what happens when marketting weenies and accountants run the show. Let a gear head engineer in there and it would probably be a remote control and you would have to get your hands dirty either.

hmm what happens when a moron takes the piece from the jack kit, and shoves it in the spare tire hole, it gets stuck, and you cant jam the long metal rod from under the hood to take down your spare tire? thats the largest problem im having with my used truck LOL how do you get that out? big magnet?

Take the black plastic guide tube off ... it just pops backward.
Then you can reach up underneath and remove the "key" piece ...
You can then use a socket and ratchet to unwind it before you
throw it away ....

I believe what happens a lot is:

People lower their spare, take it off then raise the cable back up with no tire or tension on the cable. This can cause the cable to be loosely wound up inside the housing, which will intern lead to jamming, frayed cable, or complete failure.

Every time you retract your spare tire winch without a tire on the other end you should keep tension on the cable so the cable winds tightly inside the housing.

Had to replace mine as well. Junk yard will sell them for about $50. I found someone who was parting out a truck and got it for $40.
